Precautions against ticks:

This year is seeing an increase in tick populations in Ontario, so take precautions.
  • Wear long pants, light colour is better. Tuck your shirt into your pants, and pull your socks over your pant legs.
  • Use bug spray containing DEET or Icaridin to repel ticks.
  • Avoid tall grass.
  • Immediately after the event, shower and check yourself for ticks. If you find an attached tick, remove it with tweezers or a tick remover (available from MEC). According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) "if a tick is attached to your skin for less than 24 hours, your chance of getting Lyme disease is extremely small; however, other diseases may be transmitted more quickly."
  • Throw your hiking clothes in the washer and wash with water temperature ≥54°C, or place clothing directly in a dryer and dry for a minimum of 6 min on high heat. Ticks can survive cold water washes and washes with water temperatures < 54°C.
  • If a tick has been attached to your skin for more than 24 hours, go to a clinic. Remove the tick, put it in a zip lock bag, and take it with you to the clinic, they will send it away for analysis.
