NOTES: Some things you should know about this hike:

  • to get into the gorge we will go down several flights of stairs on a metal staircase that you can see through to the ground
  • there will be some muddy areas and some slippery rocks
  • some of the trail is quite near the embankment to the raging river
  • a section of the trail will pass under an area where water might be falling / dripping on us. We may get a bit wet but not soaked
  • to get out of the gorge we will hike up a long but gradual slope
  • on previous hikes in the gorge, some turtles and snakes have been spotted

ABOUT THE GORGE HIKE

We will be hiking in the Niagara gorge a few km downstream from the falls
The falls are not visible from where we will be hiking
This will not be a long or fast hike. It is very scenic by the river and away from the river.
We will stop in a few key places beside the river to take in the wildness of the raging water.
We may see some tourist laiden jet power boats go by plying the huge rapids.
We will have lunch on boulders beside the river

MAX hikers: about 18 (+ or -)
I set the Maximum Group Size to 4, because I can take 3 passengers, but this event can accommodate about 18 hikers.
Passengers will be added as additional drivers become available.
Members on the waiting list who are willing to drive and those who have good attendance records may get first priority.

DRIVERS, WHEN YOU SIGN UP, PLEASE ANSWER THE CARPOOL QUESTION REGARDING THE # OF PASSENGERS YOU CAN TAKE IN YOUR CAR!!!
please answer in BOTH the notes section and to the RIGHT of the carpool question

Tick Information

Ticks have been found in many parts of Southern Ontario, so take some basic precautions.

  • Wear long pants. Tuck your shirt into your pants, and pull your socks over your pant legs
  • Light colour clothing makes it easier to spot if a tick is on you
  • Use bug spray containing DEET or Icaridin to repel ticks
  • Avoid walking through tall grass
  • Check yourself for ticks after the event. If you find an attached tick, remove it with tweezers. As long as the tick is attached to your skin for less than 24 hours, your chance of getting Lyme disease is negligible
  • Not all ticks carry disease, and the ones that can are not all carrying Lyme disease
