Bond Lake + Wilcox Lake 18 km (1/26/2019)

Itinerary:
PROPER ICERS ARE MANDATORY FOR THIS HIKE.
If your icers have the metal spirals (such as Yaktrax), throw them out.
Proper icers for forest trails must have sharp metal points to dig into the ice.
If you don't have proper icers, get some.
You must have icers with you to attend this hike.
Please do not show up for the hike without PROPER ICERS
There are some very steep hills as well as slopes beside the lake.
If the trails are icy, without ICERS you might slide into the lake or a tree and require a trip to the hospital!

DIFFICULTY: D4

MAX hikers: about 12 (+ or -)

I set the Maximum Group Size to 4, because I can take 3 passengers, but this event can accommodate about 12 hikers if more drivers register or hikers meet at the event trail head.

This hike will be along the Oak Ridges Trail, a combo of "there and back" with a loop around Bond Lake, over to the Swan Lake area, then pass by Wilcox Lake on the way back.
There will be a few good hills, and many flat sections

We'll stop for a lunch break on the trail in the forest

DRIVERS, WHEN YOU SIGN UP, PLEASE ANSWER THE CARPOOL QUESTION REGARDING THE # OF PASSENGERS YOU CAN TAKE IN YOUR CAR!!!

Members on the waiting list who have a good attendance history may get priority.
Members on the waiting list who are willing to drive may get priority.
Passengers will be added as drivers become available.
Alternatively, you can meet us at the hike starting location, but parking is limited.

  • ICERS - keep icers in your pack during the winter months.
  • cell phone
  • whistle
  • water 2 or 3 L
  • weather appropriate clothing
  • suitable hiking footwear
  • change of footwear for after the hike, if carpooling

This hike will go forth snow, rain or shine

DON'T get left behind! Please arrive early, the carpool will depart promptly, and we will start hiking promptly.

If you are late, you will miss the carpool, and the hike.

If you choose to meet at the event, we will not wait for late comers.

    similar design as Kahtoola, but about 1/3 the price.

  • Icetrekkers Diamond Grips - good grip, but may slide a bit on steep sheer ice.
    They rust very easily so must be dried thoroughly after use.
    more expensive than Eagle Claw Ice Cleats
  • STABILicers - good grip on level surface such as city sidewalks
    but tended to roll off my shoes on uneven terrain like forest trails
  • Yaktrax might be ok for flat, level city sidewalks,
    but are NO GOOD for forest trails with any slope
  • I suggest taking your hiking shoes with you when shopping for icers to ensure a good fit.
