Itinerary:

We will drive up to the Minesing Swamp, near Barrie. We will be leaving from Fort Willow Depot, which is one end of the historic 9 mile portage between Willow Creek and Kempenfelt Bay on Lake Simcoe. This portage was used by Indigenous Peoples as part of a communications and trade route, as well as the Voyageurs. It also played a vital communications role in the War of 1812.

The Minesing Swamp is a Ramsar site, which means Canada has it has been designated a wetland site of international importance.

The Minesing Swamp is 6,000 hectares, and contains swamp, fens, bogs and marshes. It is home to a number of birds and animals, and has Ontario's 5th largest Great Blue Heronry as well as one of Ontario's largest White-Tailed Deer populations and the largest pure stand of Silver Maple in Ontario.

The trail does pass through some wet ground (note: this is not supposed to be like the High Falls hike's 'wet ground'). Be sure to wear proper hiking boots and bring a change of shoes/socks etc.

We will be hiking a distance of 14.6k - through Minesing and back. The pace will be relaxed in order to take in the scenery - 3 to 3.5k/hour.

ALL dogs must remain leashed for the entire hike. All dog waste MUST be packed out. Dog owners are responsible for their own rides.
