Itinerary:
I have not cycled on this rail trail before, but I invite you to join me in discovering what it has to offer. The objective of this ride is to encourage those who are fairly new to rail trails, and those who want to try a ride that will be no longer than about 65 km in length.

If we are riding at a average pace of about 18-20 km per hour, a ride of this length should take about 4.5 to 5 hours to complete, if one includes some time for picture-taking and breaks along the way, and for a lunch break. We are sure to experience some spectacular fall colours during this ride, so be prepared for some visual splendor! You should also be prepared for cooler, October-like temperatures (Bring appropriate clothing, so that you can add/subtract layers as necessary.)

From my research into this trail, I understand that it has a new granular surface on the 12 kilometre portion at the southernmost end, where we will be starting our ride. There are also interpretive signs concerning historical and environmental points of interest. Onwards from County Road 22 (Horshoe Valley Road) the railtrail surface has apparently not yet been improved (it consists of unimproved rail bed); however, even this portion of the trail, according to what I have been able to gather, is fairly easy to ride on.

The North Simcoe Railtrail was used, historically speaking, for hauling goods and people between Penetanguishene and Colwell, which is near Barrie.

Upon getting to Elmvale, which is the northern point of the railtrail where we will break for lunch and then turn around, the trail actually goes on in a northerly direction along what is known as the Tiny Township line. The Tiny Township line is 22 kilometres in length and it takes one to Penetanguishene. We will not be riding on the Tiny Township portion, since we will be turning around at Elmvale.

NOTE: IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A CAR, OR IF YOU DO AND YOU CAN TAKE MORE THAN ONE PERSON/BIKE WITH YOUR VEHICLE, PLEASE INDICATE SO WHEN YOU SIGN UP, IN THE "NOTES" SECTION AT THE END OF THE REGISTRATION PAGE.

IF YOU CAN DRIVE AND YOU ARE ABLE TO TRANSPORT BICYCLES, YOU SHOULD PROVIDE ME WITH THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION WHEN YOU SIGN UP: 1) WHAT TYPE OF VEHICLE DO YOU DRIVE? 2) DO YOU HAVE A BIKE-RACK, AND, IF SO, HOW MANY BIKES CAN IT CARRY (INCLUDING YOUR OWN)?

IF YOUR TRANSPORTATION SITUATION CHANGES AFTER YOU HAVE REGISTERED (I.E. YOU AND YOUR BIKE NO LONGER REQUIRE A RIDE TO THE EVENT, OR YOU HAVE FOUND AN ALTERNATE MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION), PLEASE LET ME KNOW, SO THAT, IF YOU HAVE ALREADY BEEN DESIGNATED A TRANSPORTATION SPOT, I CAN RE-ASSIGN THAT SPOT TO SOMEONE ELSE.

IMPORTANT: IF YOU SIGN UP FOR THIS EVENT, PLEASE ENSURE THAT YOUR BIKE IS TUNED UP AND PROPERLY ADJUSTED FOR THE RIDE. AS THE RIDE IS 65 KM LONG, WE DO NOT WANT TO HAVE ANY BREAK-DOWNS, ESPECIALLY IF, THROUGH PROPER BIKE MAINTENANCE, WE CAN AVOID THEM.

Required Items to Bring:
Bike, bike helmet, spare tire tube, basic bicycle repair kit, water, lunch/snacks, suitable and variable clothing (keep in mind the potential for cooler temperatures near the water in late September.).
Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.
Rain gear (rain jacket and pants); spare tire tube and repair kit.

How to Get There:
Event Directions:We will be beginning the ride just west of Barrie. To get to the starting point, take Highway 400 to Barrie. Turn west on Country Road 90 (formerly Highway 90) and drive for 9 kilometres to Pinegrove Road. In the vicinity of Pinegrove Road you will notice hydro transmission towers. Once you get to Pinegrove Road, turn right and drive about 3 kilometres to the start of the trail. Apparently, there is a sign on the right side of Pinegrove Road, only a few hundred metres beyond the CPR train-track, which is still in use. We will park our vehicles along the side of the road.
Carpool to Event Distance (round trip):200 Km
Carpool Departure Time: 8:30 AM
Carpool Location:   Log in for location
Carpool Directions:   Log in for directions
Carpool Cost: Approximate vehicle expense for this event is $51.60 (calculated at total Km * $0.258, effective Sunday, May 12, 2024). This is based on $0.08/Km for maintenance, plus current gas price divide by 9. Your event coordinator will confirm exactly how much money is required from each person.

Notes:
PLEASE SEE THE NOTES REGARDING TRANSPORTATION IN THE ITINERARY SECTION ABOVE.

Whether 9 people can actually participate in the event is contingent on whether there are enough cars going that can take both participants and their bicycles. Therefore, if you can carry additional passengers and/or bicycles with your vehicle, it is important for you to make this known to the organizer when you sign up. I will try to ensure that everyone is accommodated, on a first-come, first-serve basis (in the order that people expressly indicate that they require transportation).

IF YOU AND YOUR BIKE REQUIRE A RIDE TO THE EVENT, OR IF YOU CAN ASSIST WITH TRANSPORTING OTHER PARTICIPANTS AND THEIR BICYCLES TO AND FROM THE TRAIL, PLEASE INDICATE THIS IN THE "NOTES" SECTION WHEN YOU REGISTER FOR THE EVENT, AND KEEP ME INFORMED OF ANY CHANGES TO YOUR TRANSPORTATION NEEDS/ PLANS.
