ALGONQUIN – XC skiing and snowshoeing for the Christmas weekend!

Please read the Whole listing before signing up to make sure you know what you are signing up for! I will increase the participants if we get more drivers.

OVERVIEW

I have been thinking about XC skiing and snowshoeing for Christmas. Most of my friends have family in GTA, and others do not ski or snowshoe. I would like to spend my time doing outdoor stuff since my family will travel away. Therefore, I had a thought...why not hold an event and invite people who want to ski and snowshoe during the Christmas? We will spend time in Algonquin Provincial Park for Saturday (Dec 24) and Sunday (Dec 25). On Monday (Dec 26), we will have a short visit to Arrowhead Provincial Park.

You can either do XC skiing or snowshoeing. Or you can do both. If there are little snow, then we all do hiking.

DATE, TIME, AND COST

We'll travel up on Saturday morning and return on Monday afternoon. We plan to meet at the Finch station.

The per person cost for the weekend's accommodation works out to approximately $72.00 (which includes a 3% TOC transaction fee). This cost is due up front by paying the TOC's Treasurer. Payment must be received by Dec 8, 2016 or you will be removed from the event. After the cutoff, anyone who hasn't paid will be removed and places will go to people on the waiting list based on who's paid first. .

If you're participating in the carpool, expect an additional cost on top of that for transportation. You will need to pay for that over the weekend so please bring cash. (Small bills help a lot!)

ACCOMMODATIONS

I booked Econo Lodge at Huntsville. Breakfast is included. It is about 30 minutes’ drive from the Algonquin. The location may not be very ideal, but it is very economical. The cottages/inns (near Algonquin Park) are either fully booked (because we are in a bigger group) or too expensive (such as $250 per night for 2 people). Some other cottages are required to book the whole week during the Christmas weekend while we only need to stay 2 nights. But you know what, we will still have lots of fun!!

P.S. If this time I get many people who are interested in the event, I can hold the same event for next year, and I can book early......this means that we can stay in a comfortable and nice place like Wolf Den (Wolf Den is full for this year...too bad)!!

The carpool cost includes the distance of round trip from Toronto to Huntsville as well as back and forth from Huntsville to Algonquin Park for Friday and Saturday.

You will expect to share a room with another person (same gender; if you signed up as a couple, please let me know). The room has two Queen beds. However, there can be a chance that I may not be able to find a roommate for you, such as no same gender or we have odd number of participants. In this case, the last person who sign up can either pay the whole fee for the room or simply drop the event.

ACTIVITIES

We do the events in small groups based on the interests (XC-skiing or snowshoeing). We can discuss more details later. Please indicate your interests when you sign up.

Saturday: We drive up at 9am and go directly to the Algonquin Park. It is expected to arrive before 1pm. We do some activities until 4pm (will check in the hotel later). In the evening, we have a dinner in Huntsville and enjoy each other’s company. I will send some options about restaurants to you.

Sunday: We drive up to Algonquin at 9am (different trails). We do some activities until 3:30pm. Please bring your lunch and snacks. In the evening, we have a nice Christmas dinner in Huntsville and we can play some games afterward.

Monday: We will check out the hotel at 9:30am and visit Arrowhead Provincial Park. It is a park very close to Huntsville. We will XC skiing or snowshoeing there in the morning. Head back to Toronto around 1:30pm.

SKI/SNOWSHOE RENTAL

Please bring your own skis and snowshoes. If you don't have one, we will stop at the Algonquin Outfitters on Dec. 24. The price for XC ski for rent is $28/day and the snowshoe is $20-$30/day depending on which snowshoes . Remember that the Outfitters is not open on Dec. 25, so you may need to rent at least 2 days for your gears.

Therefore, I would suggest if you can find some good price in Toronto for the weekend, you should do that (rent on Friday and return on Monday). MEC in downtown Toronto has a good price for rental. I called MEC and asked them about the rental. For XC skis, it is $20/day. Snowshoes is $15/day. The staff said they do not count your pick up and drop off day. Therefore, if you pick up on Friday and dropped off on Tuesday, they would only charge you for Saturday, Sunday and Monday. I highly recommend you book your rental before your trip.

FOOD

The breakfast is included in the accommodation. However, you need to pack your lunch for Saturday and Sunday. On Monday, you may need to have snack. we can grab some food on the way back to Toronto. For Saturday and Sunday dinner, we will dine in a local restaurant in Huntsville. I will do some research and send the options to the participants. Then you guys can vote which restaurant you want to go. Or we can decide when we arrive there. We won’t go to expensive restaurant.
