Itinerary:
Curious about Kurosawa? Beguiled by Bergman? Join us for Cinematheque Ontario's summer of Hollywood and foreign film classics! Here is your chance to see some of the movies that appear every film critic's Top 100 list. They could be the best films you'll ever see ... or you might leave wondering what all the fuss is about. Either way, we'll have fun exploring the classics.

The second film in the series is Akira Kurosawa's highly acclaimed Rashomon. Set in feudal Japan, Rashomon tells the story of a violent crime in the woods from the perspective of four different characters: a bandit, a woman, her husband, and a woodcutter. Only two details of the incident seem clear: the woman was raped and her husband is now dead. As each of the four relates his/her own story, what at first seemed black and white turns various shades of gray, leaving one wondering whose is the true story. From the rain-soaked opening sequence to its moving conclusion, the film is a stunning examination of truth and human nature. (With thanks to RottenTomatoes.com)

Despite its initially poor reception in Japan (audiences were baffled by the storyline, and distressed by the apparent lack of a resolution), Rashomon was a sensation in the west. It was awarded the 1951 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, and won the prestigious Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival in the same year. It set box office records for a subtitled film. It is now considered to be the film that introduced Japanese cinema to western audiences, as well as Kurosawa's masterpiece.

We will meet at 7:30 p.m. at the entrance to Jackman Hall. The screening begins at 8:00 p.m. Following the movie, we will head to Baldwin Avenue for drinks and conversation, film-related or otherwise.

Please note that members are responsible for purchasing their own tickets to ALL screenings. If you are planning on seeing more than one film in our Cinema Classics Series, you may want to consider a Cinematheque membership. Tickets, as well as memberships, can be purchased online by following the links on the Cinematheque Ontario website, or by phone at 416-968-FILM (3456). As every Cinematheque event I've attended has been pretty much sold out, you are strongly advised to buy your tickets sooner rather than later!

Other films in our series still to come include: The Lady Vanishes, The Seventh Seal, and The Bicycle Thieves.
