Itinerary:

This hike is approximately 15km that goes up, along, around and back down the Niagara Escarpment. I expect to keep a pace of at least 4.0 km/hr and we will be hiking for approximately 3.5 hours.

We will meet at the Hamilton GO Centre and begin our trip with 227 step ascent up to the top of the "Mountain" and join with the Bruce Trail. We'll meander along and down the escarpment and link up to the Chedoke Radial Trail, winding our way back up the escarpment. We'll follow the the Scenic Park Side Trail across the top of the escarpment, passing Princess Falls and Cliffview Falls. We'll then make the sharp 326 step descent down the escarpment and wander through the streets of Durand Village. We'll end our hike with some drink and food at a pub about 3 blocks from the GO Centre.

We will stop for a snack/lunch break, likely at Scenic Park where there are some benches we may be able to use. There are no facilities at Scenic Park.

Important:

  • Terrain is highly variable along this route. It ranges from flat, hilly, rocky, uneven, deep snow and wet and muddy. Regardless of the weather forecast, you will likely experience all of these conditions and must be prepared for them.
  • This event will take place rain or shine. Please don't sign up if you don't like to hike in rain conditions.
  • Trails on this route may not be maintained during the winter months. The route may be adjusted accordingly due to closures, conditions or safety concerns of the coordinator.
  • If you are weary of heights, this may not be the hike for you. We will be following closely along the edge of the escarpment and we will experience somewhat daunting heights.

  • Drivers take the 403 into Hamilton and exit at Main Street EAST. This will take you into downtown Hamilton. The GO Station is located at 36 Hunter Street East, between James and John Streets. It is south of Main street (so turn right onto either James or John while you look for parking. I believe street parking is free on weekends and there are municipal lots you can park at. • There is NO PARKING at the station itself.
  • Drives, please keep in mind you are entering a chaotic zone of one-way streets. Take care in your driving planning!
