Itinerary:

This series of events is open to members of the TOC who would like to learn about leading hiking events safely, as well as everyone else who would like to enjoy a good D4 level hike followed by refreshments and cheer on our up and coming hike leaders. The goal is to have more members becoming coordinators and leading hikes, as well as to have members who are already coordinators become more comfortable with organizing and leading hikes in unfamiliar locations. The training part may be of interest to both members who are already volunteers, and members who have yet to attend a volunteer info session.

These events will be at the D4 level: 14-20 km distance, 4 - 4.5 km/h pace, variable terrain. Not suitable for beginners.

This hike (as well as others in the series) will be organized by one of the participants under the direction of the event coordinator (i.e. me.) This participant will be provided with a brief description of a hike (such as can be found on hiking websites) and turn that into a full event description (starting point, driving instructions, refreshment stop, etc.), using trail maps, Google maps, and other resources. That participant will then lead the hike, and another participant will be backup. The coordinator (me again) will ensure that the hikes follow generally sound practices for safety. Anyone not willing to take direction in how to lead a hike should not come for the hike training.

Members wishing to participate in the hike leader training will need to acquire a map for the location they've been assigned, either the complete Bruce Trail Reference Maps (available at MEC), or else individual downloadable pdf maps from the Br uce Trail Site

Please, when you sign up, indicate in the notes whether you want to participate in the hike leader training (or send me an email to that effect.) Otherwise it will be assumed that you are just coming along for the hike, some of you may be asked to do a little role playing, e.g. get lost or sprain an ankle (not literally) to see how the hike leader handles it. Anyone who wishes to take part in the hike leader training should have participated in at least 3 TOC events.

Priority on the waiting list will go to members wanting to participate in hike leader training, drivers, and regular intermediate level hikers.

This series is about training rather than accreditation. For those wanting to go on and become TOC event coordinators, you will still need to

  • Attend a minimum of five TOC events (these count!)
  • Attend a TOC volunteer info session, if you don't see one on the calendar, let Eric know that you're interested, and
  • Complete one sponsored event (which should be a breeze once you've participated in this series.)
