Bruce Trail Series - Part 1 (4/28/2012)

Itinerary:

It's always been one of my goals to hike the entire Bruce Trail, including some of the side trails as well, because often that's where some of the interesting/scenic spots are located (otherwise why go there... right??:). Anyway... here is the start: Bruce Trail (Niagara Section km's 0 - 16.2 km main trail + 2 side trails)

Length: about 20 km. There will be no drop-outs. You must be able to hike the entire route at the specified group pace.

Pace: Average pace of 3.5 to 4 km/h. We will travel as a group, pausing frequently along some sections to take some photos. This also means that to achieve the average pace you will need to hike bit faster in other sections.

Route:
We will start in Queenston and will be hiking the main trail for 16.2 km. Towards the end we will hike the Paul Naray Silurian and Wetland Ridge side trails for additional ~ 4 km. Note that to hike these side trails will require re tracing our steps on two short sections of our route.

Sights:
The Trail starts at the southern terminus cairn at the eastern end of Queenston Heights Park. The Trail runs west along a row of trees. It enters deep woods and follows the brow of the Escarpment, along the edge of a quarry. It then makes a steep descent, and reaches a railway bed. It then follows this bed for a short distance until it emerges from under Highway 405. After a climb of 500 m it enters Fireman's Park. After skirting around the north side of a pond, The Trail climbs a hill and returns to the hardwood bush. Following the Escarpment, the Trail passes a vineyard. It then continues to follow a railroad, passes another vineyard, and the Woodend Conservation Area. Around this area we will pick up the Paul Naray Silurian side trail and then the Wetland Ridge side trails. The Wetland Ridge side trail ends at Niagara College greenhouse.

Notes:
This is an all day event. NO DROP OUTS. NO EARLY DEPARTURES. ESTIMATED time for the return to carpool will be around 7 PM.
This hike involves a car shuttle
We will be going rain or shine. Dress for the weather.
Please arrive at Kipling carpool 15 minutes early.
On route home, we'll stop at a coffee shop/restaurant for a quick refreshment/bite to eat and to finalize the carpool.

      Carpool Cost: Approximate vehicle expense for this event is $61.92 (calculated at total Km * $0.258, effective Thursday, May 2, 2024). This is based on $0.08/Km for maintenance, plus current gas price divide by 9. Your event coordinator will confirm exactly how much money is required from each person.
