Itinerary:

I've been looking forward to running this event for several months now. The Way is a movie that I first saw at its World Premiere at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival (over a year ago now). It has finally gotten a theatrical release in Canada! And since we're going on a Tuesday night, it only costs $7.50!

The movie is directed by Emilio Estevez, and stars his father, Martin Sheen. In the film, Sheen plays Tom, an American doctor who travels France to collect the remains of his adult son (played by Estevez), killed in the Pyrenees in a storm while walking the Camino de Santiago, also known as The Way of Saint James. Rather than return home, Tom decides to embark on the historical pilgrimage to honor his son's desire to finish the journey.

The Camino de Santiago is a historical pilgrimage that has been traveled for centuries. There are many routes, but all lead to Santiago de Compostela, in the northwest corner of Spain. Santiago de Compostela is said to be the resting place of St. James, one of the twelve apostles and the patron saint of Spain. The most common route, and the one featured in the movie, is 800 km long, running from France across the north of Spain.

I first heard about the Camino about 6 months before seeing the movie. I was trekking in Patagonia at the time, and I met a retired Canadian who had taken up a life of traveling and trekking - yes...it is possible :)
He told me about his personal experiences on the Camino and that it was a trip he would never forget. I didn't make much of it at the time, but when I saw this movie on the 2010 TIFF program, I knew I had to see it. The movie was terrific! We had a Q&A after with Estevez and Sheen, and the whole experience left an impression on me.

Earlier this year, I had an opportunity to travel, and I knew very quickly where to go. In late March, I walked the first 300 km of the 800 km trek (the first 1/3 of the trek that is featured in the film). It was an amazing experience and I already can't wait to go back and finish the trek someday.

Now that The Way has been released, I absolutely must see it again, and I don't know of a group of people that would appreciate this film more than the members of the TOC. Just imagine doing a 25 km urban hike every day for a month, and that's pretty much what its like on the Camino!

NOTE: Signing up for this event does not guarantee you access to the movie. I cannot control whether or not the show will sell out. To make sure you will get a ticket, you can buy tickets before the date online on Cineplex's website. Make sure you specify the right date! Or you can buy them at the theatre when you get there. I have no idea how much buzz the movie has or how busy it will be, but there are only about four or five theatres in the GTA showing it so I recommend buying tickets online if you can (there are no service charges, its the same price as buying at the theatre).

We are going to the 6:20 PM movie at the Varsity Theatre (at the corner of Bay and Bloor). If you buy your tickets early, make sure to get the regular screening, NOT the VIP screening. We will meet at 5:45 PM outside the box office. We will be going into the movie as soon as everyone arrives to get seats. Please do not be late, or you will have to come in and find us.

After the movie, if there is interest, we can go to a nearby coffee shop and I would be more than happy to talk with anyone who is interested in learning more about the Camino de Santiago.
