Itinerary:

Are you ready for another real Canadian outdoor club adventure?

You have heard about how great these adventures are from others. You have seen the pictures from past trips. Do you want to learn something new? Then this adventure is for you. It's the ultimate in light weight backpacking. No tent. No sleeping bag. No stove. And sometimes no trail.

You have attended my lecture/presentation on What should I have in my daypack ? - Survival Kit 101 on Tuesday, Mar 8, 2011. Or you may have attended my lecture on So What's Gary's Survival Series All About? on Tuesday, Aug 17, 2010. You have put your survival kit together. You have the theory. Now here is your chance to try it out. Not sure???, give me a call. With my lecture PowerPoint presentation, a little home study, some pointers and advice, you'll be ready.

I always wondered how good or bad a traditional native American Great Plains tepee would be as a shelter. So the plan is to build two out of basic plastic painting drop sheets and try it out.

A tepee is a Lakota name for a conical tent traditionally made of animal skins and wooden poles used by the nomadic tribes and sedentary tribal dwellers (when hunting) of the Great Plains.

The plan is to drive about 2 hours north of Toronto. Go on an adventure day hike, and about 5-10km in, set up a group camp and build two 6 person tepees. We will be following trails, bushwhacking and wading across small rivers, and beaver ponds to get to and from our native village.

.

Like all the other Gary Survival Series we will have our daypacks and survival kits with us. The twist, this time, you'll have a plastic paint drop sheet to help build the two group tepee shelters and spend the night in. We will of course do all the other regular activities like collecting wood, treat water, eating and sleeping. You will need to bring your own food for Saturday and Sunday. On Sunday, we'll hike out, we'll have an early supper at a local greasy spoon.

This trip is open to experienced hikers with overnight camping experience that have attended my lecture/presentation or have relevant survival skills experience. You need to be able and be comfortable bushwhacking and crossing creek, rivers, small lakes and beaver ponds on this adventure. You need to be able to hike on trails at around 4 km/hr and bushwhack at 2-3 km/hr.

Feedback from previous Gary's Survival Series event participants indicated that the members learnt a lot on the event. Some members have attended more than one event. They must be keeners! The series and event is set up as a learning experience, combining theory, personal research, group discussions, practice, and feedback. We will push your normal hiking and camping boundaries mentally. It will really make you think about what you carry on your next day hike.

Note; Lecture PowerPoint presentation is available on request. Just send me an email.

Once you sign up for the event additional detail PowerPoints will be provide on various specific survival subjects.
