Itinerary:

INTRO TO BACKCOUNTRY SKIING

Ancient Lapplanders discovered the joys of wilderness skiing long before snow cats were domesticated and taught to groom ski trails. So leave kitty at home and enjoy a day of backcountry Nordic in the rolling hills of the Oak Ridges moraine north of Pickering.

No crowds, no trail fees, great snow and closer to Toronto than Collingwood. What's to think about?

THE PLAN:
We will spend 3-4 hours exploring approx 14 km of trails before heading to Port Union for a late lunch at the Black Dog. (Trails run through hardwood and deciduous forest and across open hillside and most have tracks set by previous skiers. If you have never skied cross country before this may not be the event for you. Contact the coordinator if you have questions!)

CARPOOL: Toronto wakes up long before the subway on a Sunday morning! Start your adventure early by wending owl-like through the ghostly streets of Toronto to the nearest blue night network stop. Take it south to Lakeshore Blvd where Go Transit snakes in and out of the city from the wee hours on. Once on the train you can seek out fellow TOCers or snuggle up comfortably to your skis and snooze until you arrive in Pickering in time for carpooling to Walker Woods at 9am.
Scheduled train departure times are:
Mimico (416 869-3200): 7:54
Exhibition: 8:00
Union: 8:10
Danforth (416 869-3200) 8:23

FACILITIES: There are no facilities at Walker Woods other than the bushes.
