Itinerary:

Come and discover Algonquin Provincial Park in the winter. Hear the wolves howl at night and discover the snow covered un-discovered wilderness. It is the first provincial park in Canada having been established in 1893. It covers about 7,653 square kilometres. This park features granite outcrops, vast wetlands and mixed forests, plants and wildlife. Spot the tracks of deer, moose, martens, fishers, otters, foxes and wolves and occasionally, the animals themselves. Birds such as the Common Raven, Gray Jay, Boreal Chickadee and colourful winter finches are also frequently seen.

We will be driving to the Huntsville area and on to the west side of the park on Friday morning (yes you must take Friday off work) and then snowshoeing/backpacking into the park. We will be snowshoeing at a moderate pace (3-4 km per hour), on lakes, trails with some bushwhacking from lake to lake. The plan is to cover ~40 Km loop over the 3 days (2 camps) tailored to the local snow/ice conditions and group pace. This will be a good trip to test out your winter sled. We'll be travelling about 80% by frozen lake. We plan to exit the park on Sunday afternoon and drive back to Toronto.
