Camping at Killbear, Kayak Lesson & Paddle with White Squall (incl Moonlight Paddle) (7/3/2009)

Itinerary:

This weekend is for those who want to learn some kayak paddling skills, practise and do a bit of camping. Novice paddlers are welcome! $160 Per person plus taxes – includes kayak lesson, single kayaks and gear rental for full day, shuttle of kayaks to Killbear Park and evening/ afternoon guided trip. Lunch and dinner not included. Participants may sign up and pay individually for this programme.

We will meet Friday at Killbear Provincial Park, site #723 and #720. The drive is 247km (3 hrs) (See directions below).

July 4th - White Squall staff at 9 am at Killbear ready to paddle - (they will send out a daytrip clothing checklist along with registration / medical waiver forms in advance) 9 - 9:30 am - Meet, greet, overview of day, outfitting of pfd's, skirts, orientation to kayaks, safety gear.

9:30 am to Noon - Basic Kayak Lesson - for those wishing to cover some more intermediate strokes we may have time to cover some skills too depending on how many experienced kayakers we have and that group needs & safety are not compromised.

Noon - 1 pm lunch

1 pm - 4:30 pm - afternoon trip exploring surrounding islands. Trip options depending on weather include:

1. Paddle to west of Killbear from Killcoursie day use beach - Via Pleasant island (good swim, snack break ), finishing at Pancake Island where you'll find smooth glacier smooth rock, pine and sparkling freshwaters and awesome view of sunset over Georgian Bay . 4:30 - 6:30 pm Dinner break on Pancake Island - hiking, swimming, exploring opportunities exist, plus picnic site equipped with outhouses. 7 pm to 9:30 pm moonlight paddle return to Killbear. Distance 15 km round trip from Killbear - 4-6 hr paddle depending on group speed and weather.

2. Paddle to east of Killbear from Lighthouse point beach - Explore east side of Killbear Park, via north Big Sound islands , Mowat Island, finishing at Huckleberry - Hole in the Wall for dinner break. Huckleberry and Wall Islands are pine clad, pink granite, tall islands with great opportunities for hiking, swimming and wonderful views from high tops of island of town of Parry Sound Harbour and Parry Island to south and views of sunsets over Killbear Park peninsula to west - 4:30 - 6:30 pm Dinner break at Huckleberry / Hole in the Wall - 7 pm to 9:30 pm moonlight paddle return to Killbear. Distance 16 km return trip to Killbear Park - 4-6 hr paddle depending on group speed and weather.

Please note: route plans may need to be altered depending on weather and groups paddling ability. We run kayak lessons and trips rain or shine. If we have to cancel evening program due to weather a partial refund will be issued.

Sunday: We will leave mid to late afternoon on Sunday so that we have most of the day to enjoy. (We will probably break camp in the morning and then spend the rest of the day at the beach)

Please note that the club policy is that PFDs must be worn and zipped at all times while on the water.

From Downsview:
1. Head west on Sheppard Ave W toward Dufferin St - 0.2 km
2. Turn left at Allen Rd/William R Allen Rd S - 2.0 km
3. Take the Kings Hwy 401 W exit - 0.9 km
4. Merge onto HWY-401 W - 4.7 km
5. Take exit 359 for Kings Hwy 400 N toward Barrie - 1.1 km
6. Merge onto HWY-400 N - 207 km
7. Continue on HWY-69 - 11.9 km
8. Turn left at HWY-559 - 10.1 km
9. Turn left to stay on HWY-559 - 9.0 km Arrive at Killbear Provincial Park >

Required Items to Bring:
Camping equipment: tent, stove, water bottles, food, proper rain gear, suitable boots, a backpack, sleeping bag and pad.

Clothing that you can get wet. But White Squall does provide us with wet suits for our lesson.

How to Get There:
Event Directions:From Downsview Station, return to #401 and/or #400 North to Barrie, continue on #400 and #69 toward Sudbury. At Cranberry, and Highway 522, turn right and meet at Grundy Lake site #308.
Continue North on #69, 15km to turn left at Hartley Bay Rd. and follow to the end.

Carpool Cost: Approximate vehicle expense for this event is $154.80 (calculated at total Km * $0.258, effective Friday, May 10, 2024). This is based on $0.08/Km for maintenance, plus current gas price divide by 9. Your event coordinator will confirm exactly how much money is required from each person.

Notes:

Please note that I want to get there by mid-day that means at least 2 people must be able to take Friday off. The second car can leave later.


- Registration is NOT COMPLETE until you've signed up and paid by the registration cut off date. The money must be in the TOC's possession by that date. No exceptions.
- When a minimum group size appears, this is to let you know that the event will be cancelled with full refunds to those who have already paid, if the minimum number of registered participants is not met. For any events where TOC needs a minimum number of participants, there will be absolutely no refund of money if you cancel.
