Itinerary:

By signing up for this event, you agree to, and acknowledge, the following:

  1. Should this event involve a car pool, you will wear a face mask at all times when inside a vehicle

Wolf Den is back for January! After having to cancel a year ago for the Omicron wave, I'm very happy to announce we are back to Algonquin together.

Now, while my typical event descriptor is below, this year won't be entirely the same as usual.

  1. Wolf Den's prices have gone up (slightly) for the first time in many years.
  2. If on the weekend of Wolf Den you are SICK, you should not be coming on this trip. (This is something you should already know. I don't want you to spread the regular flu or the novel kind.)
  3. Because of the two items above, I will be asking for more money than usual as buffer against sick people (so they can be refunded). If (almost) everyone shows up there will be refunds in person at the event (CASH$$$) but if a few people drop out because of illness this 'buffer' means I won't personally be funding the shares of the missing participants. I hope you understand :)
  4. Please don't use this as a reason to drop out for other reasons; signing up means you intend to join us and have booked the time in your calendar.
  5. Another obvious one: because of Covid this event is intrinsically riskier than usual. You'll (potentially) be sharing a car with other people and definitely be sharing a cabin. This is a given. Please understand this before signing up.

The historical event description continues below...

OVERVIEW

Winter at the Wolf Den has become a yearly tradition with the TOC, and it has always been one of my favourites. Wolf Den is a hostel on the outskirts of Algonquin park and beautifully appointed with a large shared kitchen and communal areas.

The main facilities will be entirely ours for the weekend: we've booked the whole thing. (Or at least south of the road, I need to make that clarification these days :)

DATE, TIME, AND COST

We'll travel up Friday afternoon/evening and return on Sunday. As always, we'll try to sort out a carpool that will accommodate people's individual schedules and locations. Please remember however, that the official leaving time is 6pm on Friday at Downsview station and that should be an option for everyone signing up.

The per person cost for the weekend's accommodation will be $130.00 (which includes a 3% transaction fee and the 'buffer' mentioned above). This cost is due up front by paying the TOC's Treasurer. Payment must be received by January 1st.

Note: The full cost of the rental (including transaction fee) is $2,176.49. If we've sufficient interest and everyone is able to come, I'll bring 25 people. This potentially will mean non-trivial refunds to each person from the $130 collected above.

If you're participating in the carpool as a passenger, expect an additional cost on top of that for transportation. This I'll collect at the event and distribute to the drivers.

ACCOMMODATIONS

There are several rooms available both in the main lodge and in the satellite cabins. Expect to share a room with 2-3 others (I'll try to help guide preferences, but I don't micromanage this very much.)

There are two private rooms available to friends or couples willing to share the beds. If you want this to be you, first sign-up for the event, and second email me which two people are sharing. The first valid requests will get the room. There are no bad rooms, just ones a little chillier / further from the bathroom ;)

Shared bathrooms and showers are available in the main lodge.

Bedding and towels are provided.

ACTIVITIES

While there are skiing and hiking trails within a short walk of the Wolf Den (not to mention a great waterfall) we're also right on Algonquin's doorstep!

With this many people, there will be multiple groups heading out both days: if you're interested in skiing, snowshoeing or hiking, you're likely to find like-minded members to head out with.

If you need equipment, the Wolf Den is right beside Algonquin Outfitters.

In the evenings expect a social atmosphere upstairs in the loft, talking or playing games, and in all likelihood, a campfire outside.

Finally, I'd be remiss not to mention the available sauna :)

FOOD

The Wolf Den has a large, fully equipped kitchen available for our use.

Saturday evening we'll organize an (optional) potluck dinner which I've always found to be a great experience.

Beyond that, meal planning will be up to each of you. (Though you may wish to look for like minded people on the trip or in your carpool. We can help here.)
