Itinerary:
At 10:00 a.m. sharp, we will meet in Collingwood, at Collingwood Harbour, Birch Street, which is roughly 1 km from where Highway 26 intersects High Street. There is lots of parking available at Collingwood Harbour, Birch Street. The Georgian Rail Trail runs from this starting point to Meaford Harbour, and is about 35 km one way. This is an easy trail to cycle, because it is fairly level and well maintained. However, the idea is to cycle all the way from Collingwood to Meaford and then back to Collingwood, for a total of about 75 km.; therefore, some strength, fitness and endurance will be required, and we will be moving along at a fair clip (averaging about 18 km per hour). Note: You MUST be able to keep up with this speed if you register for the event.

While riding along this trail, we will pass by mountains (not of the Alberta variety), apple orchards and beaches. At the Collingwood end, we will pass through wooded areas along the sandy shores of Northwinds Beach. There is an historic train Depot along this portion of the route, and beyond the Depot there is a view of Georgian Bay if one dismounts from one's bike and takes a short hike up a hill in the vicinity of Georgian Peaks Club. After that, one passes by the town of Thornbury, which has a beautiful harbour, historic buildings, and some fine shops and restaurants. The portion of the Georgian Trial that runs between Thornbury and Meaford can be spectacularly beautiful. During this leg of the ride, we will pass through apple orchards on our way to Meaford Harbour. At Meaford Harbour, we will stop for lunch and some well-deserved ice cream, and for a short stroll around the harbour area of Meaford. (We have one this ride a few times now, and it is always a most enjoyable experience.)

AS THE RIDE IS A LONG ONE, WE DO NOT WANT TO HAVE ANY BREAK-DOWNS, ESPECIALLY IF, THROUGH PROPER BIKE MAINTENANCE, WE CAN AVOID THEM. BE SURE YOUR BIKE IS TUNED UP, AND THAT YOU HAVE A SPARE TIRE TUBE AND THE CAPACITY TO CHANGE A TIRE.

This ride constitutes a "qualification event" for longer, multiple-day rides.

Required Items to Bring:
Bike, bike helmut, water, lunch/snacks, spare tire tube, basic bicycle repair kit (with, at a minimum, tools for changing a tire).
Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.
Rain gear (rain jacket and pants).

How to Get There:
Event Directions:Take Highway 401 to Highway 400 North, which leads to Barrie. At Barrie, take Exit 98, the Bayfield St. (Stayner/Wasaga Beach--hwy. #26/27) cut-off. Turn left at the lights on to Bayfield St., following Hwy. #26/27 signs. Travel north on Bayfield St. (Highway #26/27) through fast-food alley. Turn left at the Hwy. #26 West Stayner/Collingwood sign. Follow Hwy #26 to Stayner. Staying on Hwy. #26, you should then turn right at the lights in Stayner, where there is an Esso Gas Centre. Continue along Highway #26 to Collingwood.

IT IS SUGGESTED THAT YOU LEAVE TORONTO BY 8:00 A.M. IN ORDER TO GET TO THE COLLINGWOOD STARTING POINT BY 10:00 A.M. THE DRIVE THERE WILL TAKE ABOUT 2 HOURS.

Carpool to Event Distance (round trip):336Km
Carpool Departure Time: 8:00 AM
Carpool Location:   Log in for location
Carpool Directions:   Log in for directions
Carpool Cost: Approximate vehicle expense for this event is $86.69 (calculated at total Km * $0.258, effective Saturday, May 11, 2024). This is based on $0.08/Km for maintenance, plus current gas price divide by 9. Your event coordinator will confirm exactly how much money is required from each person.

Notes:
Whether 9 people can actually participate in the event is contingent on whether there are enough cars going that can take both participants and their bicycles. Therefore, if you can carry additional passengers and/or bicycles with your vehicle, it is important for you to make this known to the organizer when you sign up. I will try to ensure that everyone is accommodated, on a first-come, first-serve basis (in the order that people expressly indicate that they require transportation).
