Write Up:
Day 1 was a perfect day to be on the water. Arriving at Killarney in mid-afternoon and paddling into the evening was enjoyable. The first portage got us warmed up, and the others that followed only became easier. At 90 lbs. Linda D. carried her weight in gear (impressive). Day 2 and we were on the water shortly after 9:00 a.m. After portaging our gear, we hiked up Silver Peak, the highest point in the La Cloche Mountains. The summit provided spectacular views of the surrounding lakes; we could see as far away as the "super stack" in Sudbury, and the open waters of Georgian Bay. Our hike involved many stops along the way to pick wild blueberries. After lunch on the peak we returned to our boats for the next leg of the trip. A healthy paddle and another portage later and we reached Balsam Lake where we set up camp. Bear activity had been reported in the area, and even been the cause of campsite closures, but we had no bear sightings. The starry skies were amazing, and several people paddled out onto the lake to get the full panoramic view. Rogelio & I was busy contemplating how to become #61 when he informed me that I would have to sleep elsewhere so he could charm the ladies. Day three we got on the water at 10:00 a.m., and by noon there were thunderstorms. We pulled off the lake at the first sign of lightning and stayed off while the weather passed. Whitecaps on the open water of Bell Lake were intimidating at a distance, but ultimately were not that bad. We lunched on the shore at the access point and headed out, stopping at the first service station for ice cream. Traffic was thick in areas, but it gave us an opportunity to slow down and look for wild blueberry stands, which people were eager to patronize (even though the berries were not cheap). I enjoyed the trip very much.
