June 17, 2007: Bike Ride on the Victoria Rail Trail: From Fenelon Falls to Kinmount and Back (69 km)

While internet descriptions of the Victoria Rail Trail would have one believe that the trail is in good condition and very pleasant for riding, we discovered, much to our dismay, that, between Fenelon Falls and Kinmount, the trail had been widened and covered with large, loose gravel and/or sand. In other words, it had been altered to suit the needs of all-terrain vehicles and motor-bikes in the summer, and snowmobiles in the winter, much to our chagrin. All of us found the trail-riding difficult, especially those of us on hybrids rather than mountain bikes. But even those with mountain bikes were finding the riding exhausting and, sometimes, even downright unpleasant. It is nothing short of a miracle that we did not have any flat tires while riding on this trail.

Because of the rough condition of the trail, we stayed on it for only half of the ride to Kinmount. In Kinmount, we ate lunch at the rear of a small establishment that served mostly hamburgers, hot-dogs, fries and ice-cream.

On the way back to Fenelon Falls, Chuck decided to go all the way on the trail. Gary, a local bicycle enthusiast who joined us for the ride, did the same. The rest of us rode the trail half-way, and then followed the secondary highways back into Fenelon Falls. The highway riding was faster and smoother, but the distance was greater and there were a few challenging hills to keep us all honest. In the end, we all made it back to Fenelon Falls at about the same time. Jenn M’s running group was there to meet us upon our return.
