Backcountry skiing is always an adventure! Unlike groomed, track set trails at xc resorts, you never know what’s up ahead on unmanaged trails. Steep hills with sharp turns, flat terrain, dead end trails, snowshoers with dogs… Trails can be so narrow you'll be brushing past low hanging tree branches and you may be the first person on a trail since the last snowfall.

On Sunday morning, 16 of us met up at the trail head (marker #8) and set off on a xc ski adventure through Walker Woods, a plantation forest along the Oak Ridges Moraine just south of Uxbridge. There was a well marked track from previous skiers so no trail breaking was required and there was loads of snow.

We skied up and down lovely rolling hills for about three hours. A small group made it down to the steeper terrain of Glen Major Forest, while the rest of us mostly stayed up in Walker Woods. Eventually we all returned to the trail head, and we carpooled to Port Union for a late lunch at the Black Dog pub

. Thanks to linked loops that criss-cross sort of haphazardly thoughout the 1500 hectares, it would be easy to enter the park every weekend during ski season and ski a different route each time. The Glen Major Forest just south of Walker Woods has steeper trails and some lovely vistas. (See trail map in the photo section - note that some trails may be closed to minimze the impact of visitors on the natural environment).
