Write Up:
This was our first TOC outing on a ROM Walk, and I think we'll gladly do these walks again. The initial sight of about 60 (?) people milling about waiting was kind of scary, but then we discovered there was to be more than one guide! Our guide, Virginia, managed to overcome street noise and was very entertaining as she filled us in on various interesting and odd facts about the buildings in this area. We started out at Little Trinity Church, then went on to Enoch Turner Schoolhouse (the first built in Toronto), saw the depression in the ground where Taddle Creek once flowed on its way to Lake Ontario, learned about the ever-present danger of fire in old Toronto and the reason for firehall towers (to dry the hoses!), heard about a famous duel over a lady's honour, found out why the windows in one building are all different (to advertise the selection of windows for sale), looked at the large mural of Toronto's history on the side of the Toronto Sun building, visited the cool and quiet courtyard of Berkeley Castle, and ended up at the Distillery district where we learned about making whiskey but (sigh) didn't get a sample. Afterwards we had strong (but tasty) coffee and interesting conversation at Balzac's. Later, we enjoyed the atmosphere around St. Lawrence Market on our way home.
