Write Up:
- Another excellent hike at McCrae!
- no mosquitoes and no biting flies. though there were a very few
small
pesky bugs flying around
- a bit of rain on the drive up. during the hike it was mainly
cloudy with the sun peeking through now and then. approx 12c
- pace was a bit more relaxed than usual
- lots of mud and large puddles in a few areas
- approx 1 hr into the hike we saw a Massasauga rattlesnake on the
path. we took the long way around and gave the snake a wide berth,
after taking a bunch of pics
- we saw several tents along the way where people were camping
- we had to cross a couple of beaver dams. everyone made it across
without falling in the water
- .
- had lunch on boulders at the narrows (no shortcut to get there)
- several hikers descended the very challenging route down to the
"rapids"
- the "rapids" is the water draining from McCrae Lake into Georgian
Bay
- it was about 20 feet wide, several feet deep and flowing quickly
- when I hiked there last fall, the "rapids" were 2 feet wide and
inches deep. we were able to jump across it
- not today
- took the short cut on the way back.
- stopped at the Crow’s Nest Lookout on the way to the narrows, and
back
