We had a great discussion concerning Will Ferguson's travelogue "Beauty Tips From Moosejaw". The book chronicles Ferguson's three years of travelling across Canada and back again, from an evening of bizarre poetry reading in Victoria, childhood recollections of growing up in Vermilion, experiencing the Polar Bears of Churchill, drinking screech in St. John's and to a fascinating visit to the Republic of Madawaska (little known to most of us!), just to name a few. Ferguson provides a tremendous amount of historical context for each place he visits, intriguing local lore that every Canadian high school history teacher would be well served to include on a course syllabis. We all felt inspired to travel to these places, or revisit them as the case may be. While not everyone in the Club enjoyed Ferguson's sense of humour, we all really liked his book. It is an easy read and it's fun. He chooses to discuss the cities and towns that aren't necessarily on the radar of most vacationers (there is NOTHING about Toronto, hallellulah!). This book will be on my gift giving list this Christmas; it's an entertaining journey from the rugged coast of Labrador to the sun-dappled streets of Victoria, "literally sea to shining sea".
