It was another great day to volunteer with the Credit Valley Conservation Authority!

This time, we were helping improve the trails at Woolen Mills Conservation Area, in the small, charming town of Erin in Caledon. Along with the TOC, there were members of Trout Unlimited, a fly-fishing club, and a local high school’s environmental club. It was great to see so many people out to care for this natural space.

Erik, Dorianne, and Vicki (I think – sorry if I’ve gotten it mixed up) started off with the pruning of branches that were encroaching on the trail itself. Meanwhile, Linda, Thai, Ihsan, and Tania worked on filling a large hole in the park with stones and gravel in order to deter the use of ATVs and dirt bikes in the conservation area. (It did seem a little creepy for them to be filling a hole in a forest; a little too much like “Shallow Grave, if you ask me!) Erik helped carry 4-by-4s from the truck to the trail where Dorianne, Vicki, and I were working with the high school kids and others to dig shallow trenches for them. (Hopefully, these 4-by-4s will prompt visitors to stay on the trails, thereby reducing disturbance of the environment.) Linda and I each derived a sense of achievement from hammering in 2-foot pieces of rebar into the forest floor (with a really HEAVY sledgehammer!) in order to secure the 4-by-4s in place. Great cheering ensued.

As per usual, the CVCA treated us all to a yummy lunch of barbequed burgers and hot dogs (with a vegetarian option, yay!). Then, according to plan, the TOC gang went on a brief walk to “downtown” Erin to sample the delicious wares from Steen’s Diary (Tania raved about the chocolate milkshake), Holtom’s Bakery, and Debora’s Chocolates.

Another great day volunteering with the TOC!
