10 very experienced hikers started the hike. Only 5 finished!
the first 3 km were flat with unchallenging terrain, although we kept up a good pace, jogging a bit
2 droppped out shortly after we started on the DV biking trails. there was lots of mud on the steep slopes making it treacherous for the unconfident hikers who were reduced to a snail's pace.
after several more km, 2 more dropped out. they had enough of the mud, and were having trouble keeping up with the fast pace, which included quite a bit of jogging and some running.
the 5th was falling behind, lost sight of us, took a wrong turn, then phoned the hike leader to say he would find his own way home.
so, 5 of us survived the biking trails, had a few minute break at the brick works, then sped on to rosedale station to finish up.

the ground had frozen overnight, but started to thaw in many areas which were in the sun. that meant a layer of very wet heavy clay mud which got the better of a few who went home with muddy pants, jackets and hands.

duration was 3.5 hours
