Write Up:

There were seven of us on today's winter migration birding hike. The wind made it bitterly cold.

We identified the following:

  1. Whistling Swan Family - male, female + 5 immature
  2. Oldsquaw (Long-Tailed Duck) - numerous male & female, only the male has a long tail
  3. Common Goldeneye - male + female
  4. Bufflehead - numerous male & female
  5. Common Merganser - male + female
  6. Hooded Merganser - male + female

After stopping several times to identify the above, we decided to keep a good pace and continue on to the lighthouse. It was even windier there but always enjoyable to see it again.

The forecast was for the wind to increase around noon. It was already strong but, sure enough, it gusted even more.

We decided to go for hot chocolate after the hike. We wanted to warm up & to socialize. Many thanks to Darko as he treated everyone to a baked apple / berry pie.

I will plan another birding hike in a month or so; we can compare the number of birds we see.

$7 was collected in voluntary donations. Thank you.
