Cycle to the Beach on April 22, 2007

We all met up at the Cherry Beach parking lot, and we chatted briefly with those who were there for Steph’s dog-romp event. Tania was there with Milo, and he looked ever so cute when strapped into the backpack-like contraption with which Tania carries him on her back while riding her bike.

Getting to Cherry Beach was more challenging than usual, since there was construction on the bridge leading to the parking lot, and we all had to take a detour via the Don Mills Roadway and Commissioner’s Road in order to get onto the southernmost leg of Cherry Beach.

It was such a beautiful day for cycling that we all agreed that we would add the Leslie Street Spit to our journey. We went all the way in to the lighthouse at the southern tip of the Spit, and on our way back headed for our original destination, the eastern beaches.

When we got to the beach, we decided not to cycle all the way in, as it was rather crowded. We stopped for lunch just outside the volleyball courts. After lunch, we started throwing a small football around. Before long, we had a game of four on four started. Mitch and Sue decided that football was not for them, so they went off on a short walk through the beaches while the rest of us insisted on demonstrating why we never made it to the CFL.

Vera’s talent as a wide receiver was evident to all who were present; she was a real offensive threat every time she was on the field. Chuck’s interceptions made him the outstanding defensive player of the game. It was great fun to throw the football around. Who would have thought that cycling and football would be such a good combination?

On our way back from the eastern beaches, a few of us intended to meet for a few drinks in the Distillery District. However, on the way there we somehow got split up.

All in all, it was a very satisfying day on Toronto’s waterfront.
