Wed, Aug 7 2013 - Knots for your needs (View Original Event Details)
|
It turned out I had a lot of material to cover and it took more like 2 hours to finish. Nevertheless, people had enough fun practicing tying knots and using them for typical camping tasks. Here is a summary of the knots we went through:
I. Types of ropes: material, construction, diameter.
II. Storing rope: spool, bag, proper coiling technique.
III. Rope parts and basics:
- standing part, working end, tail;
- loop, bend, bight, overhand, slip knot.
IV. Tying two ropes together:
- Square knot vs. Granny knot;
- Fisherman's bend -- for fixing broken rope.
V. Attaching rope to trees and poles:
- Clove hitch -- use for clothesline;
- Adjustable grip hitch -- for tensioning clothesline;
- Tent guyline hitch -- tensioning lines attached to pegs.
VI. Making loops:
- Overhand loop, Figure-8, Inline Figure-8 -- use for hoisting and trucker's hitch;
- Bowline -- use for hoisting and towing;
- Alpine butterfly -- hang foodbag between two trees
VII. Trucker's hitch: tie a canoe to car's roof.
VIII. Bear rope: standard way (using figure-8 and clove hitch), PCT (using blocking twig).
Donations collected: $1.
