Sat, Jun 8 2013 - SLOWPOKE HIKE #2: Beautiful Hockley Valley (11 km) (View Original Event Details)
|
Saturday turned into a wonderful day for a hike. Although the forecast warned of the possibility of rain, we had sunny skies for most of the day, giving lovely light through the trees. We were the first group of Slowpokes on the trail but were overtaken by Christine’s larger group. That must mean we took the time to appreciate the scenery, delicate flowers, mushrooms, bugs and little streams along the way. We hiked approximately 11 km over the course of about 4.5 hours with a break for lunch. I would recommend this hike for beginners, though it is not totally flat. The driving time from Downsview is only an hour, the parking is free, the trails weren’t too busy, and the scenery was quite lovely. Almost half the group was new to the TOC and attending their very first event. Welcome Shiro, Terrence, Jesse, Tamica and Jingjun! Thanks to Alina for the commentary and info about many of the plants and trees. Neil generously shared his food with many of us, as well as his tips for healthy living. I’m feeling inspired! Thanks to David and Jesse for taking turns as the lead and ensuring we didn’t go the wrong way. And, of course, a big thanks to the drivers, without whom we couldn’t do the hike at all: Ron, David and Alina. Thanks to all of you for coming out and I hope to see you again soon!
