First Joint Toronto Outdoor Club and University of Toronto Outing Club TripWe had a successful first joint Toronto Outdoor Club and University of Toronto Outing Club trip to the UTOC cabin near Collingwood. We had a small group, three TOCers and four UTOCers. We did not have enough snow for skiing and so we hiked instead.

The two other TOCers, Katherine and Iullian had never been to the cabin. And so on Dec 30, I showed them the impressive crevices behind the cabin and took them up to the top of Metcalfe Rock for a view of the Cabin and the surrounding countryside.

On Dec 31, we went on a 5-hour, 12 km hike along the ski trails. Among other places, we hiked down Red Death (the most challenging of the x-country trails) and up and down Wild Mouse trail, where we got a close up view of a patch of forest damaged by a tornado some years pervious. Back at the cabin, we had enough snow to toboggan down the hill out front. It was good to get in at least one winter sport!

We ate a great New Years Eve dinner featuring Chicken Provencal. The rest of our New Years Eve plans for a campfire and more tobogganing were rained out. Instead, we sat around the cozy wood stove in the cabin to ring in the New Year.

On New Years day we checked out The Scenic Caves in nearby Collingwood. They also had all but no snow. And so we went on a hike to the suspension bridge and then up to the lookout above the caves themselves.

In spite of the lack of snow, it was a good trip.
