Write Up:

"What should I have in my daypack" presentation was attended by ~35 people.

We started the evening with a slideshow of Gary's Survival Series #1 to #5 (2010 season) as people signed in and ordered some food/drinks.

For the most part, everything on a typical day hike, usually goes as planned. But what if something happens? Something breaks on your gear? Someone gets injured? The group or just you get’s lost and have to spend the night in the woods? Are you prepared?

The audience was asked to bring their daypack to the meeting, as if they were going on a typical TOC day hike. We started the evening out with the audience sharing what they had in there pack. Whistle, first aid kit, lighter, food, rain jacket…..etc. All good stuff!

The lecture presentation was a blend of a PowerPoint, hands on demonstration of what’s in my survival kit, amusing adventure stories and audience participation.

The contents of my survival kit focused on the following topics; first aid kit, repair kit, navigation, water, emergency clothing, shelter, fire, signaling and food. We also touch upon the human emotion of fear and panic and group dynamics in these situations and what you should do as a leader or member of the group to improve the situation you find yourself in.

I think the fire stick demo was the high point! You now have the knowledge. The next step is to build your survival kits. Then sign up to one or more of Gary’s Survival Series events and practice using your knowledge and kit on a real survival training event.

If you could not make the event and are interested in receiving the presentation, send me an email at; gary.ataman@messier-dowty.com. See you all soon. Gary
