Show's like Survivor Man, Man vs Wild stress the importance of making a good shelter and fire. Why? Usually the number one thing that kills you, even in the summer time is hypothermia or exposure. During the May long weekend in Ontario, a few people drown, most are in a canoe due to cold water shock.

The evenings presentation was given by Paul Tarsitano.

Paul, is a paramedic and a Wilderness Emergency Medical Technician (W-EMT). He has taught First Aid/CPR with St. John, Red Cross, Cardiac Safe City, and Heart & Stroke.

In addition, Paul has instructed with Wilderness Survival Challenge School and has taught special education at a high school for over ten years. He has experience with the Canadian Ski Patrol, Search & Rescue, Marine Unit, and appeared on several TV and radio shows and articles in outdoor magizines. This experience has given him a good insight in prevention and treatment of trauma and medical conditions in a wilderness setting. Paul has studied with numerous agencies located in B.C., Ontario, and encourages all students to broaden their minds and skills by taking courses with other agencies.

He is a current an instuctor in; Ice Rescue, Swift Water, Wilderness Survival, Wilderness First Aid, and CPR.

Paul discuss prevention, signs and symptoms, and treatment of immersion and acute hypothermia as well as, dressing for the outdoors, the 1 10 1 rule for cold water. He showed a few short videos to support his points.

The evening concluded with a hands making of a hypothermia wrap involving the whole group. Check out the photos.

Thanks Paul!

See you soon. Gary
