Write Up:

The most important thing we learned about Walker Woods on this hike is that it is VERY easy to get lost! Despite being armed with a route map and written description of the trail from TorontoHiking.com, we frequently found ourselves at trail intersections scratching our heads (figuratively and, thanks to the mosquitoes, literally). There are many sidetrails, so a good map (of the entire trail system) is essential, as is a compass. However, having said that, we were never far from "civilization", so there was no danger of starving in the wilderness; we just had some difficulty following the exact route we had planned. LP's GPS unit helped considerably, as did some mountain bikers we met on the trail.

The rain that had been forecast held off, and it was actually very comfortable hiking weather, except for the afore-mentioned mosquitoes. The trails were soft and well-maintained, with gentle hills leading us through the forest. We found a meadow for our lunch break, with the added bonus of some wild strawberries. Many wildflowers were in bloom and the vegetation was especially lush given the recent rains. At one point, we walked along a pasture containing curious horses. As always, there were many interesting discussions along the trail.

It was a pleasure to find such beautiful countryside just over an hour's drive from the city. And a special welcome to Francesco and Diane on their first TOC event!
