Learn to Canoe

Have you ever wanted to be taught how to properly handle and maneuver a canoe?

How to lift and portage a canoe? How to enter and exit properly?

How to paddle straight, turn, etc?

While upholding the high standards set by Paddle Canada and The Ontario Recreational Canoeing and Kayaking Association - In a three hour+ session you will be taught by a certified ORCA canoeing instructor on the various aspects of recreational flatwater canoeing and gain the skills necessary to comfortably use and paddle a canoe....some people even learn to paddle the thing straight!

  • No canoeing or swimming skills are necessary to participate in this event.
  • You will not be required to tip into the lake.
  • Life jacket is to be worn at all times.

    This event is held at PINEHURST LAKE CONSERVATION AREA.

    Canoeing/Paddling Skills Taught:

  • Safety, theory and trip Planning for canoeing
  • Legally required items you must have in the canoe
  • Selecting the right paddle and life jacket
  • Parts of the canoe and paddle
  • What to put in a day trip pack
  • Observe a canoe over canoe rescue
  • What to do if the canoe flips
  • Paddling in the front and back of the canoe
  • Carry and launch a canoe
  • Enter, exit and balance the canoe safely
  • Move the canoe forward in a relatively straight line, as well as turn right and left
  • Pivot, move sideways, stop, and reverse the canoe’s direction

    This event is on a first pay basis. People on the waiting list who pay in advance will be given priority after the registration cut off date. The event coordinator reserves the right to remove a member who does not have the proper gear for this event and will return their payment in full.

    We will have a social pub stop in Paris(15 minutes nearby) near to the Grand River after our lesson.

    Event Directions:

    Drive time is 1 hour and 20 minutes each way

    Follow the QEW to the 403 and pass Hamilton and Brantford:

    From 403 - take the Rest Acres Road exit into Paris(Turn NORTH on Rest Acres Road).

    You will reach a T in the road, with a cemetery in front of you and a Pioneer gas station off to the right. Turn RIGHT there onto King Street , pass the Pioneer Gas Station (on your right), and follow King Street down the hill.

    Turn LEFT onto Dumfries Street just in front of the Kentucky Fried Chicken, toward downtown Paris .

    Turn LEFT at the T in the road onto Grand River Street North .

    Go straight through downtown Paris and up the hill.

    Continue past Sobeys (on your right) on Grand River Street North , which becomes Highway 24A.

    Continue straight out to Pinehurst Lake Conservation Area, which will be on your RIGHT.

    Carpool Cost: Approximate vehicle expense for this event is $57.28 (calculated at total Km * $0.258, effective Monday, April 29, 2024). This is based on $0.08/Km for maintenance, plus current gas price divide by 9. Your event coordinator will confirm exactly how much money is required from each person.

    Notes:
    You may stay in the park to explore the beach, picnic areas and trails after the lesson
    - Registration is NOT COMPLETE until you've signed up and paid by the registration cut off date. The money must be in the TOC's possession by that date. No exceptions.
    - When a minimum group size appears, this is to let you know that the event will be cancelled with full refunds to those who have already paid, if the minimum number of registered participants is not met. For any events where TOC needs a minimum number of participants, there will be absolutely no refund of money if you cancel.
    - We encourage all members to follow our Etiquette Guidelines at all times while participating in TOC events.
