I really didn’t think we would do this event because of the uncertain forecast for heavy rains(what a surprise!), wind, thunder showers and lightning!

As it turned out, we DID have all of the above!

After we all met on time and went through some lengthy discussions on the various aspects, equipment, techniques and safety concerns for canoeing and canoe tripping - we geared up with paddles, life vests(PFDs) and our canoes.

Apparently canoeing is good practice for new and old couples. The importance of communication, getting along and going “in the same direction” was stressed by the teacher.

A demonstration was first given on how to lift and carry(Portage) a canoe. Alex became a quick expert at this.

A demonstration was given on how to launch the canoe into the lake and the techniques to enter and sit in the vessel.

Once on the water, we went through various boat and blade techniques, including switching partners in the canoe, on the lake. Variations of the “downward dog” position was demonstrated in the boat as partner positions were switched.

We were treated to a good view of a large snapping turtle camouflaged with green moss. The sun was out, it was hot and we certainly went through lots of paddling drills.

Oh yes, demonstrations of dragon boating...er...canoe racing was given by Dave and Nicholas.

The highlight of the day was the “canoe over canoe” rescue performed by Dave, Nicholas, Ghanesh and Geraldine.

After no one else “volunteered” to fall in....

....We raced back to shore and took turns running off the dock and jumping into lake.

All participants successfully achieved the “Safe Canoeing” certification. We now have 12 eager TOC canoeist wanting summer to come by.

Thank You all.
