Write Up:
Tracey and I left Toronto at 7:30 a.m., stopped for coffee in Belleville, and started our ride by about 11:30 a.m. on the Cataraqui Trail in Harrowsmith. The trail was much improved in sections from when I last rode on it in June 2007. But there are still rocky and rough patches that require one's full attention. You can not ride a rode bike comfortably on this trail. But my touring bike and Tracey's mountain bike with slicks did just fine. The trail weaves its way by small lakes and alongside rocky terrain, providing some truly splendid scenes from start to finish. At the half-way point, at Chaffey's Lock, we sprawled out on the grass next to the marina, where fishers were busily heading out in their boats, and had a relaxing lunch. By the end of the ride, we had done 93 km, no small feat on a fairly rough and demanding rail trail. This is not a ride for those who cannot deal with some discomfort, but it is nonetheless a ride worth a day-trip from Toronto. After having supper at Swiss Chalet in Bellville, we made it back to Toronto by about 11 p.m., and felt satisfied with our accomplishment.
