87. Louth & Rockway Falls (10.5 KM) (4/9/2022)

Directive From The TOC Executive

Interim COVID- 19 Rules for the Toronto Outdoor Club

  • You must meet the following four conditions to participate in any TOC events.
    Within the 14 days preceding the event:
    1. You have not travelled outside of Ontario;
    2. You don’t have any COVID-19, cold, or flu symptoms;
    3. You have not knowingly been in contact with a confirmed COVID-19 case;
    4. You have taken and passed the Ontario COVID-19 self- assessment on- line questionnaire.
  • You will bring a cloth mask/face covering, which you will wear during the event meet- up, plus any time during the event when the 2m social distancing is not possible.
  • You will comply with any other rules as detailed on the TOC Rules Amendments
  • You will comply with any additional rules set by the organizer of the event for which you have registered, which could be more strict than the ones detailed above.

NOTES

  • These rules are in effect immediately and until further notice.
  • YOU MUST CONFIRM IN THE "NOTES" SECTION DURING SIGN UP THAT YOU MEET ALL THE CONDITIONS LISTED IN THIS DIRECTIVE AND YOU WILL COMPLY WITH ALL THE INTERIM RULES.
    Your event coordinator has been instructed to remove your event registration without further notice if you do not take this step during your registration.
  • Your coordinator may also remove you from the event (even after it has started) if you fail to comply with the rules, and report you back to the TOC Executive.
  • If you cannot or do not wish to follow these temporary rules, please wait to sign up for any TOC events until the interim rules are lifted.

EVENT DETAILS

So, this is my first time leading this 10 KM hike along the Bruce Trail. I've done the section around Rockway Falls, but never done Louth Conservation Area.

Please bring a lunch and at least 1-2 Litres of water. We will stop for lunch at the top of Rockway Falls.

EVENT STATS

  • Distance: 10.5 KM
  • Terrain: Primarily single track dirt trails, with some rocky sections - typically, this section of the Bruce Trail is very muddy this time of the year
  • Trail vs Road: 9 vs 1
  • Elevation Range: 40 Meters
  • Challenging Climbs of Note: 4 climbs of over 25 meters
  • Largest Ascent: 40 m
  • Washrooms: No
  • Highlights: 2 Waterfalls

    I usually carry a pair of icers with me from the first snowfall of the year until the end of April, so I recommend having a pair in your pack to deal with any potential ice.

    PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE WON'T BE A CARPOOL FOR THIS HIKE DUE TO CURRENT TOC COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS

    Event Directions:

    Approx address is: 3155 Staff Ave, St Catherines - 43°07'17.9"N 79°21'04.4"W

    Please note that my event directions are from KIPLING STATION.

    • Leaving Kipling - Exit the TTC Parking Lot and turn right onto Kipling Avenue for 2 KM.
    • Take the Gardner Expressway WEST. Please note that you have to merge over 2 lanes very quickly to stay on the QEW to continue west.
    • Follow the QEW for 83 KM and exit at RR 26 Jordan Road (exit 55).
    • At the stop sign turn left and then at the following stop sign turn right (south) onto Jordan Road.
    • Follow Jordan Road for 4.5 KM until the road ends.
    • Turn left (EAST) onto King Street (RR 81) for 400 meters
    • At the first road, turn right (SOUTH) onto Seventeenth St for 2 KM.
    • Turn left (EAST) Staff Road for 500 meters.
    • Turn left into parking lot.

    CLOSEST POTENTIAL WASHROOM
    By turning right (WEST) at King Street (RR 81) and traveling 1 KM, it will take you into the town of Jordan, where there is an Esso Gas Station, with a Country Style, with a washroom.
