Itinerary:
As you may know, Prince Edward County is a great area for cycling, and it is very close to Sandbanks Provincial Park. What better way is there to enjoy the second weekend in June than to do some biking in Prince Edward County while also camping overnight on Friday and Saturday nights at Sandbanks Provincial Park?

For Prince Edward County, see http://www.pec.on.ca/Welcome.html

For Sandbanks Provincial Park, seehttp://www.ontarioparks.com/english/sand.html#

We will be leaving from Toronto at 10 a.m. on Friday morning, June 13, 2008, and arriving at Sandbanks Provincial Park by 2:00 p.m., for check-in to our Group Camp-site, which has already been booked. After setting up our tents and designating certain individuals to cook supper for the entire group at our shared camp-fire and grill (please contact Jim O if you are interested in volunteering for cooking responsibilities), the rest of us will go for a short cycling excursion in the afternoon. On Friday evening, we will have a communal supper and shared activities around the fire.

On Saturday morning, we will have a large-group breakfast, in preparation for a day of cycling in Prince Edward County. (Please contact Jim O if you are interested in volunteering for breakfast duties.) Those who go cycling in the county will stop for lunch in Pictin or somewhere else that seems inviting. Certain individuals will be assigned the task of preparing supper for the whole group (again, if interested in cooking duties, please contact Jim O to express your willingness to help out).

On Saturday evening, we will again have shared activities at our campsite. We will also have a beach close by that will be ours alone for the duration of our stay.

On Sunday morning, we will rise for an early group breakfast, and we will go out for a morning bike ride, before returning to our camp-site to pack up and leave by 2:00 p.m.

NOTE: THIS WILL BE AN ALCOHOL-FREE EVENT. THE OBJECTIVES ARE TO ENJOY THE GREAT OUTDOORS AT A GREAT CAMP-SITE; TO INTERACT IN A SAFE AND FRIENDLY ATMOSPHERE; AND TO GET IN SOME GREAT CYCLING. IF YOU CANNOT COMPLY WITH THESE OBJECTIVES, THEN PLEASE REMOVE YOURSELF FROM THE EVENT.

We cannot check into our Group Campsite before 2 p.m. on Friday, and we must check out of the Campsite by 2 p.m. on Sunday. If you sign up for this event, you should be in good, above-average riding form, and capable of riding AT LEAST 50km per day on each of two consecutive days (Saturday and Sunday). In other words, this event is meant to constitute a fairly vigorous physical workout for those who participate.

When we are not cycling, there may be some opportunities to hike on some of the local trails, or to relax at the beach, in Sandbanks Provincial Park. However, cycling will be our primary focus.

Note: This event MAY overlap with a companion hiking and camping event (and possibly with a companion golfing event) for those who would rather camp and hike, or golf. Be sure you sign up for the event suitable for you (i.e. the one focusing on cycling, the one focusing on hiking, or the one focusing on golfing). IF YOU HAVE SIGNED UP FOR THIS EVENT, THEN YOU HAVE SIGNED UP FOR THE CYCLING EVENT. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN GOLFING OR HIKING, THEN YOU SHOULD SIGN UP UNDER A SEPARATE EVENT DESCRIPTION THAT MAY BE POSTED BY OTHER VOLUNTEERS.

If interested in this cycling event (the "Prince Edward County Bike Ride"), you may sign up now, but you may later have to qualify for participation by demonstrating, through participation in at least one spring biking event with Jim O, that you are prepared for the type of physical workout that this event will require. My purpose in organizing this event is to provide an opportunity for some fairly vigorous training for cyclists, and so you must be capable of engaging fully in the training component of this event if you sign up.

When posting one-day bike rides for dates preceding the Prince Edward County Weekend Trip, I will designate such rides as "qualification rides" for the Prince Edward Country Trip and other lengthier trips that are in the planning stage. So, to know which events serve as "qualification events", be sure to read event descriptions carefully. Feel free to contact Jim O if you have any questions regarding the nature of the cycling contemplated on this event or regarding qualification requirements.

I want to encourage enthusiastic participation in cycling events, but I also realize that participation in more demanding cycling events lasting more than one day requires effective preparation and fitness training, so that everyone who attends is capable of participating fully and enjoyably with the group in the type and level of activity proposed.

If you are not prepared or ready to participate as required in the type of cycling that this event will entail, you might prefer to sign up for one of the the companion events, which will focus on hiking and camping, or golfing, respectively. Each companion event will have its own listing. In any event, there will be easier cycling events listed on other dates that will be suitable for you if you are a beginner or casual cyclist.

Those who participate in this event should have the necessary camping equipment (for car camping) and at least some overnight camping experience.

In order to participate in this event, you may also have to attend a pre-event meeting for organizational purposes. Any such meeting will be scheduled well in advance of the event.

Required Items to Bring:
Your own bicycle (in tip-top condition), two spare tire tubes, a basic bicycle repair kit and working tire pump, containers for carrying water (if you do not intend to buy bottled water); tent, sleeping bag, food and cooking equipment for camping.
Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need.
Funds for snacks and meals and other entertainment options in the Ottawa area (we will be going out in the evenings!).

How to Get There:
Event Directions:To be provided at a later date.
Carpool to Event Distance (round trip):650Km
Carpool Departure Time: 10:00 AM
Carpool Location:   Log in for location
Carpool Directions:   Log in for directions
Carpool Cost: Approximate vehicle expense for this event is $167.70 (calculated at total Km * $0.258, effective Sunday, April 28, 2024). This is based on $0.08/Km for maintenance, plus current gas price divide by 9. Your event coordinator will confirm exactly how much money is required from each person.

Notes:
Update: Note that the departure time at the carpool has changed. I have now booked a Group Campsite at Sandbanks Provincial Park for up to 30 people. The Group Site has outhouses, a fire grill and pit, water tap, 6 picnic tables and overflow parking, and it is within a few hundred metres of a sandy beach on East Lake (this will be our private beach for the duration of our stay).

We will be cooking our meals together, and so, prior to this event, Jim O will be making arrangements for particular individuals to take on cooking responsibilities. The cost of this event INCLUDES the cost of the meals.

Later in the summer, there may be opportunities to participate in a week-long bike tour in Quebec, and possibly another week-long bike tour in New York State. Therefore, if you are interested in building your cycling strength for more arduous events down the road, the Prince Edward Country Trip, like the Ottawa Trip scheduled for the Victoria Day Weekend in May, will be an excellent opportunity for you to train in the necessary way for subsequent events that are currently in the planning stage.
- Registration is NOT COMPLETE until you've signed up and paid by the registration cut off date. The money must be in the TOC's possession by that date. No exceptions.
- When a minimum group size appears, this is to let you know that the event will be cancelled with full refunds to those who have already paid, if the minimum number of registered participants is not met.
