Itinerary:

This hike is approximately 15 km that weaves up and down the Niagara Escarpment with varying degrees of difficulty. There is a mix of urban and natural terrain as we cut through Hamilton's oldest and newest neighbourhoods to get to the Bruce Trail, and climb steel staircases that connect lower and upper Hamilton.

We will meet at the Hamilton GO Station located on Hunter Street between James and John Street. Please meet me at platform 9.

We will stop for a snack/lunch break along the trail. Please bring something with you as there is nowhere to stop for food along the way. We are also hiking through either woods or residential areas and there are no facilities outside of our starting point and ending point. You may also want to bring something to sit on such as a piece of insulated foam/pad or a portable chair that is small, light and easy to carry for when we stop for a break.

We'll end our hike at the Cat and Fiddle Pub, which is right around the corner from the GO Station. Important:

  • Terrain is highly variable along this route. It ranges from flat, hilly, rocky, uneven, deep snow and wet and muddy. Regardless of the weather forecast, you will likely experience all of these conditions and must be prepared for them.
  • This event will take place rain or shine. Please don't sign up if you don't like to hike in "yucky" conditions.
  • Trails on this route may not be maintained during the winter months. The route may be adjusted accordingly due to closures, conditions or safety concerns of the coordinator.
  • If you are weary of heights, this may not be the hike for you. We will be following closely along the edge of the escarpment and we will experience somewhat daunting heights.

Required Items to Bring:
  • Hiking shoes/boots
  • ICERS ARE MANDATORY FOR THIS HIKE
  • 2L of water
  • Snacks
  • A seat
  • pub money
Recommended Items to Bring:

How to Get There:
Event Directions:

  • GO Buses (Union/Hamilton Express) and Trains (Lakeshore West line with connections from Aldershot Station) leave Union station about every 20-30 minutes.

  • Union/Hamilton Express bus leaves Union at 9:30 arriving at the event start location at 10:30.
  • The Lakeshore West train leaves Union at 8:43, arriving at Aldershot Station where you will catch a connecting GO Bus at 9:59. This bus will bring you directly to the Hamilton GO Station for 10:14am.
  • Check www.gotransit.ca for further information.

  • Drivers take the 403 into Hamilton and exit at Main Street EAST. This will take you into downtown Hamilton. The GO Station is located at 36 Hunter Street East, between James and John Streets. It is south of Main street (so turn right onto either James or John while you look for parking. I believe street parking is free on weekends and there are municipal lots you can park at. Download a map of them or find more parking information here: http://www.hamilton.ca/CityDepartments/PlanningEc Dev/Divisions/ParkingBylawServices/Parking/hamilt ondowntownparking.htm
  • There is NO PARKING at the station itself.
  • Drives, please keep in mind you are entering a chaotic zone of one-way streets. Take care in your driving planning!
