Doors Open is an annual series of events, when many sites in Ontario communities open their doors to the general public. We'll cover two such sites in King City, while traversing the Oak Ridges trail: the Marylake (Augustinian Monastery) and the Eaton Hall.

We'll start our walk at the Keele St trail entrance. Roadside parking is available beside Keele St, ~3 km north of King Rd, south of Sideroad 16. Nearest address for GPS: 14015 Keele Street, King City, ON L7B 1A3. The Oak Ridge Trail Association signs will help you identify the starting location.

We'll walk at a speed of 3.5 km/hr; you can walk faster if you wish to.

Some images from September 2013:

Loop 1: Marylake (7 km) (Route map)

First, we'll head over to the Marylake Augustinian Monastery. This lake-side site was once Henry Pellatt's country estate. The entrance arch and the gatehouse were designed by the architect E. J. Lennox, who also designed Henry Pellatt's Casa Loma in Toronto. Beside the Norman-Scottish castle-style building, you'll also see a rustic brick barn. We'll visit the Pine Farms Orchard, where you can grab something to eat. We'll then return to the parking spot.

Loop 2: Eaton Hall - Lake Seneca (6 km) (Route map)

Next, we'll visit the Eaton Hall, a 35,000 sq. ft. Norman château where Lady Eaton lived after her husband's death (yep, we're talking about the Eaton family of the Toronto Eaton Centre fame). We'll circumambulate Lake Seneca, walking through the Seneca College Campus, and then return to the parking spot.

If time permits (and if your driver is willing), you can explore some of the more urban Doors Open sites around the city centre.
