Itinerary:
We will meet for dinner at 6 pm at Swatow Restaurant, at 309 Spadina Ave, just north of Dundas. Then we will stroll to the start of the walk just before 8 pm at 100 McCaul Street.

To honour author and urban activist Jane Jacobs, who died a year ago, Mayor David Miller announced in November 2006 that May 4 would officially be Jane Jacobs Day in Toronto.

The First Annual “Jane’s Walk” will take place on Saturday, May 5, 2007, in numerous locations throughout Toronto. Each walk will feature a tour guide who can speak knowledgably about the neighbourhood, and will highlight the people, places, and public spaces that make that particular community interesting and unique.

The details of our hike are the following:

Nightlife - From Grange to Grunge
Neighbourhood: The Grange
Meeting Location: 100 McCaul Street
between Dundas and Queen)
Start Time: 8:00pm

Max Allen, editor of the book Ideas that Matter – The Worlds of Jane Jacobs Max Allen will lead a walk through his neighbourhood, beginning at 8 pm at the front doors of the Ontario College of Art and Design, 100 McCaul Street, between Dundas and Queen. The walk will include Grange Park with its views of OCAD (the building on stilts) and the Art Gallery of Ontario (under construction), the historic houses of Beverley Street and the buildings along Phoebe and Soho, south through the seldom-visited alleyways to John and Queen Streets and the chaos of the nite club district. The four blocks of Queen Street we’ll see – proposed (and opposed) for designation as Toronto’s first commercial historical district – are a classic Jane-Jacobs-concatenation of mixed urban uses, minus any sense of community.
