Itinerary:
This is a really cool opportunity to witness a high concentration of migrating birds of prey (hawks, falcons, eagles, etc.) We will travel to the Beamer Memorial Conservation Area for the annual Niagara Peninsula Hawkwatch’s Good Friday “open house”, where members of this birding organization welcome the public to teach and inform them about this amazing migration that passes over their heads twice a year.

Why Beamer Memorial? From the website of the Niagara Peninsula Hawkwatch website:

“In spring, the cold waters of Lakes Ontario and Erie will not produce thermals and the birds of prey migrating north into Ontario must go around these two bodies of water. The configuration of the two lakes creates a funneling effect, and the result is that large numbers of birds of prey fly directly over the Niagara Peninsula. Beamer Memorial Conservation Area, located on the top of the escarpment overlooking Grimsby, is an ideal observation point for hawk enthusiasts.”

I went to Beamer last year by myself for a day last spring, and blogged about it here. It was a great experience. The people there are very dedicated and interesting!

If we are lucky, the weather won’t be too cold, but it won’t be too warm either, because if it is, the air will rise and the hawks will be too high to be seen. Ideal weather is a bit cool and overcast. So keep your fingers crossed!

Definitely come warmly dressed, as there will not be a lot of physical activity to keep you warm (although there are hiking trails at this conservation area). Bring any books you have on birds. If you want to do a little research prior to this event, you might check out the following books at the local library:

“A Photographic Guide to North American Raptors” by Brian K. Wheeler and William S. Clark
“Hawks in Flight” by The Flight Identification of North American Migrant Raptors by Clay Sutton, Peter Dunne, and David Allen Sibley

Both these books are intended to help you identify the different species of raptors. Each book has its merits.
