Itinerary:

OVERVIEW

This is a small group trip to cross-country ski and/or snowshoe at the charming, rustic Wolf Den Bunkhouse, a hostel in the forest on the outskirts of Algonquin Park about 3 hours drive north of Toronto.

If you haven't been to the Wolf Den before, it's great -- not as luxurious as a hotel but definitely a few steps up from a snow cave! (The big annual TOC trip to the Wolf Den in January always has a massive waiting list!) The main lodge has a large communal kitchen and eating area on the main floor. It also has a few shared bathrooms and showers. The bedrooms are in the basement - they're small, with basic beds and don't necessarily have dressers or bedside lamps and that kind of thing, but they're toasty thanks to radiant heating in the floors! The second floor is a loft with couches and chairs, boardgames and an electric fireplace to cozy up to. There's a cedar sauna outside, so bring a swimsuit and let all that city stress sweat away!

ACCOMMODATIONS AND COST

Unlike the big TOC annual visit in January, we won't be the only guests at the bunkhouse on this trip. We have six bedrooms reserved. Rooms have a combination of single and/or double beds, which means you'll most likely be sharing a room with another TOC member.

The per person cost for the weekend's accommodation works out to approximately $66.00 (which includes a 3% transaction fee) for two nights’ accommodation. This initial cost is due up front by paying the TOC's Treasurer and reserves you a spot on the trip. Payment must be received by Jan. 26, 2014 .

The ACTUAL cost could range from about $34 to $45 per person per night, but it'll depend on how many people sign up and whether there are one or two people in your room. I'll figure out the exact costs when we're there.

Any two people who wish to take advantage of booking a double bedroom may request them from me - AFTER REGISTERING. The first to request it AND pay will get it. A simple email letting me (Christine B.) know the Treasurer has been paid for both of you is sufficient to secure the spot - you can confirm with me before paying that you're first in line for the slot.

If two people don't book the doubles and you would prefer your own room, you may be able to pay a little extra and have a double room for yourself. (It would work out to about $45 per night.) Email me if you'd be interested should this option come available.

The Wolf Den supplies linens and pillows, so no need to bring a sleeping bag. They also supply towels.

If you're participating in the carpool as a passenger, expect an additional cost on top of that for transportation. I'll collect this at the event and distribute to the drivers.

For those who travel into Algonquin Park, there's a per vehicle pass of $16.00 per day, which we'd divide among those in the car.

TRAVEL PLANS

We'll travel up Friday evening and get back to the city on Sunday evening. As always, if enough people are able to leave earlier on Friday, we'll arrange it. Please remember, however, that the official leaving time is 5 p.m. on Friday at Downsview station.

ACTIVITIES

While there are skiing and snowshoeing trails within a short walk of the Wolf Den (not to mention a big waterfall) we're also right on Algonquin's doorstep.

We'll travel into Algonquin both days to ski and, if there's enough interested people, snowshoe.

If you need equipment, the Wolf Den is about 1.5 km from Algonqu in Outfitters.

FOOD

The Wolf Den has a large, fully equipped kitchen (stove/ oven/ microwave/ all dishes, pots, pans) available for our use, with a fridge to store perishables.

On Saturday evening, we'll have a potluck dinner. I'll email the group in early February to coordinate who brings what so we don't end up with 10 bags of corn chips! Please mention any allergies in the notes when you sign up.

Beyond that, meal planning will be up to each of you. We'll grab something on the road on the ride up. On Saturday and Sunday, I'd recommend breakfasts that don't take too long to cook so we can get outside and lunches that can be taken along to eat on the trail if you plan to ski or snowshoe.
