Itinerary:

THANKSGIVING CANOE TRIP TO TEMAGAMI

PLEASE ONLY SIGN UP IF YOU HAVE READ THIS IN FULL!!

This is a fun fall canoe trip for intermediate /advanced level TOC paddlers or those with significant back country experience with the club.

ROUTE:
* We will drive up Fri morning, pick up our canoes and put in at the outfitters.
*Our route will take us through smaller lakes and rivers up to Anima Nipissing Lake and back. It may vary depending on the skill of the participants, but expect numerous short portages (under 1000 m) and hopefully no white water! (Brrrr)
*We will paddle for 4+ hours a day as conditions require, with the emphasis on having fun and enjoying the scenery versus logging km.
*The water will be cold and it may go down to 0C overnight so participants should be experienced camping in the fall and have appropriate gear (paddling and camping).
* It's rated D5 as it's four longish days in remote wilderness in the colder fall weather, with lots of poorly maintained portages. We may be paddling in difficult conditions, with strong headwinds and rough water, and may encounter fast moving water if we go onto some larger lakes. The weather (and wind) in the fall in Temagami can be especially unpredictable.
*Bring a camera, we might be too far north for brilliant fall foliage, but it will be very remote and so a good chance to see wildlife and beautiful sunrise/sunsets!

GEAR :
*You will need to supply / rent all your own gear. (Paddles and PDFs come with rentals if you don't have your own).
*If you wish to bring your own canoe please discuss with organizer first.
* Depending on interest, food may be shared.
*Participants (passengers) will be responsible for reserving canoes from the outfitter.
*All participants will be required to pitch in and help with shared activities such as bear hangs, collecting fire wood, portages etc.

DOGS: Dogs are welcome but must arrange their own carpool and have previously been on ToC events + been on overnight canoe trips.

=> It is your responsibility to make sure you comply with the requirements for this event.
Please do not sign up if:
**you can't swim very well without a PFD,
**have not already been on several overnight canoe trips
**have not been on at least 3 previous TOC events, including one with the organizer of this trip. Signing up for an in-town event in the near future is fine, let me know though).

Priority will go to:
**people who are known to the organizer, and
**have been on previous TOC backcountry events.

=> Please email me the following info within 24-48 hours of signing up or you will be deleted.
Be sure to assess your abilities as fairly and honestly as possible as the info is important for the safety of the trip!
If you exaggerate your skills the entire trip may be put at risk and unfortunately we may have to turn around and go home.

*What canoe trips have you been on in the last year or so? ( How many days, where, etc)
*Where did you learn to canoe, how well can you steer, (do you have any ORCKA certificates etc)
*How far can you swim in a lake without a PFD
*Have you ever practiced canoe rescues?
*What backcountry gear do you have - bag/mat//tent/stove/water purification/pack/gortex socks etc
*Name of a TOC coordinator that has been on events with you.
(If you don't send specific info you may be deleted from the event.)

=>PRETRIP: There will be a mandatory pre trip meeting in the Yonge + Bloor area on Mon Sept 23 @ 6pm to discuss gear and carpool. Make sure you can attend before signing up.
This trip requires you book Friday Oct 11 off work...

Do not sign up if you are not a good swimmer. If your boat capsizes or you slip on rocks and fall in the water without a PDF you put yourself at risk and may endanger other members of the group.

We will observe all park rules + follow principles of Leave No Trace http://www.leavenotrace.ca/principles You must wear a PFD at all times when you are in a boat on the water. (TOC policy).
