Itinerary:

CANADA DAY LONG WEEKEND IN TEMAGAMI

This will be a quiet weekend canoeing some of the smaller lakes east of Temagami at a relaxed pace. We will also hike a short section of the Ottawa Temiskaming Highland Trail. There will be plenty of opportunities to explore and appreciate the biodiversity and ecology of both old growth and ancient forests in this unique region of Ontario.

THE PLAN:
THURSDAY: Drive up to Temagami, stopping for dinner on the road. Overnight at the outfitters just north of Temagami. (Smoothwater is known for its outstanding food!)
FRIDAY: After a good Canada Day breakfast we will paddle to Blueberry Lake, set up our camp and then explore the biodiversity of ancient white and red pine forests as we hike 3 old growth trails. One trail will take us up along a granite ridge where we will see some spectacular views of the area.
SATURDAY: Paddle back to our access point, taking in some scenic detours along Cassels Lake. Drive north to Friday Lake, backpack in to our basecamp on Crown land along the Ottawa Temiskaming Highland trail. The trail is difficult as it is not well marked in places or there is no treadway. The group will go at the pace of the slowest person.
SUNDAY: Day hike along the Trail, return to Toronto mid afternoon, stopping for dinner on the way.

CARPOOL: Temagami is a 5-6 hour drive, so we must leave promptly on Thursday afternoon to arrive in reasonable time. Please do not sign up for this trip if you are not able to leave at 4pm.

DIFFICULTY RATING: Participants must be well experienced, self sufficent paddlers with excellent swimming skills; this is not a trip for beginners. Please confirm your paddling experience to the coordinator when you sign up. Participants may be removed if they do not have sufficient experience. Note that there will be two portages of 300m and 600m.

MANDATORY PRE-TRIP MEETING: A mandatory pre-meeting is scheduled at 7pm on Tuesday, June 7 to discuss the trip, food and gear. If you do not attend the pre-meeting, you will be removed from the trip. Please do not sign up for this trip until you are sure you can attend. Where possible the group will split the cost of stove fuel and food (2 breakfasts, 3 lunches and 2 dinners) and share tents and stoves. For further information check the TOC Event Checklists for required gear.

PDFs: TOC policy is that PDF (personal flotation devices) must be worn in the canoe at all times, no exceptions

DOGS: Please call/email me to discuss before signing up with your dog.
