Itinerary:

This is the final winter of operations for Kukagami Lodge, which has hosted many special TOC events, and so this is the last TOC Winter event that will be held there. For those of you who have already been to Kukagami, you know what a special place it is; for those who've not yet had the opportunity, this is your last chance to experience the Yellow Brick Road, Viki's home cooking and a rousing game of Apples to Apples.

We are booking cabins at the Lodge for an extended weekend. All cabins have battery-run lights and are kept comfortably warm with woodstoves, and everyone has their own bed complete with flannel sheets, blankets and comforters. The lodge also has a Finnish sauna to enjoy!

Depending on the weather we may be doing a combination of hiking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. We'll ski or snowshoe the 7km from the winter parking lot to the Lodge - it's an easy trail for those who aren't expert skiers, and takes about 1.5-2 hours, a great warmup for the weekend; our bags will be brought in by snowmobile.

Nearly 30km of cross-country and snowshoe trails make Kukagami a winter paradise. The ski trails are all track-set, and range from short loops for the beginner all the way up to long, hilly, winding trails for the advanced skier. The show-shoe trails are clearly marked, and allow the intrepid visitor to get into terrain that is all but impassable in the summer months. For those seeking a longer trek or ski, a magnificent stand of old-growth pine can be reached across the lake. There is definitely something here for everyone!

The weekend includes Viki's fantastic home cooking: three meals a day and snacks of cookies, muffins or fruit at any time. Viki is always happy to accommodate food preferences and restrictions by preparing great vegetarian or vegan meals - just indicate any dietary requirements in the notes when you sign up.

We'll arrive for dinner on Friday and leave after breakfast on Monday. This will allow us to have the ski-in and -out, two full days of skiing and showshoeing, and then avoid the weekend traffic and drive in daylight on the way home.

Kukagami is truly a welcoming place in a wonderful setting and this is a not-to-be-missed event!
