Itinerary:

Do you want to be inspired and learn how to pack light? Join me in welcoming Ed Schmidt, who just completed the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT)

The Pacific Crest Hiking Trail runs 2650 miles (4260 km) from Mexico to Canada along a series of mountain ranges dominated by the Sierra Nevada and the Cascade Range. Each year, a handful of “thru-hikers” backpack the entire trail in a single season. From the brutal heat of the Mojave Desert to the steep walled peaks of the High Sierra, and from the stark volcanic terrain of Central Oregon to the soaring vistas of the Northern Cascades, thru-hikers experience a wide variation in elevation, climate, weather, and wildlife.

The PCT, together with the Appalachian Trail (AT) and the Continental Divide Trail (CDT) form the “Triple Crown” of American long-distance hiking.

In this presentation, long-distance backpacker Ed Schmidt (AT’09/PCT’10) will present a travelogue of his 2010 PCT thru-hike and discuss the history, culture, and community that surround the US National Scenic Trails. A Q&A session and gear “show and tell” will follow the presentation. Check out his gear and what kind of food he brings.

This session should be of particular interest to TOC members who enjoy:

  • Wilderness photography.
  • Backpacking.
  • Fastpacking and ultra-lightweight backpacking.
  • Long-distance hiking and distance hiking culture.
  • Long-distance trail dancing and hobo beard growing.

    Ed's Bio

Born in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ed spent childhood summers traveling to each and every province and territory in Canada. Having graduated from the University of Waterloo with a degree in Pure Mathematics, Ed still spends his summers traveling: thru-hiking the 2180-mile Appalachian Trail in 2009 and the 2650-mile Pacific Crest Trail in 2010. During the off-season, Ed works in the residence at Covenant House Toronto - a youth crisis shelter - and studies Political Science at the University of Toronto.

This is a Gary recommended event!
