| Itinerary: |
In search of a D6 level hike from a province
without mountains,
we are returning to Bruce Peninsula National
Park.
This is the most beautiful and rugged area for
backpacking in
Southern Ontario. The second half between
Halfway Log Dump and High Dump is particularly
irregular,
includes scrambling up short walls, features lookouts on Georgian
Bay, and ends in a 150ft descent from the cliffs to the
shoreline. As well,
the
first 2km section between Halfway Log Dump and
Storm Haven
required a full hour to walk last year.
See Bruce Trail map #39.
Friday afternoon, we must carpool promptly at 3pm
and arrive at
the Halfway Log Dump parking lot no later than
6:30pm. It
would be best if you brought a bag dinner for
yourself, came
fully packed, and ready to walk. Sunset is at
9:00, it is 8km and a
minimum 2 hour hike to High Dump.
The trail becomes very dangerous in the
dark.
On Saturday, there will be several options. The
day hike will
cover the length of the park, and 25.5 km round
trip to the Grotto, the park's main attraction.
From the Bruce
Trail Reference Guide: "The section between km
151.1 and
156.2 is considered to be the most rugged and
challenging
hiking along the whole length of the Bruce Trail.
Be
prepared!" The alternatives are to hike along
the shore,
climbing under, through, and around the many
boulders which
have fallen from the cliffs, or hang out on the
beach.
Sunday we can stay to around noon before walking
out.
Be forewarned, you should expect to grow blisters
and get sore
feet. Bring heavy, hard boots that have been worn
in.
You must be able to attend a pre-meeting the week
prior to the
trip. If you do not attend the pre-meeting, you
will not be
allowed to participate. |
|
Required Items to Bring:
Pack a bag dinner for Friday, and leave a snack in
the car for
yourself on Sunday. We will plan a menu
together, split the
cost and weight of food. Bring at least 2L of
water in
refillable bottles. Everyone brings at least a
50L backpack,
sleeping bag and pad, their own dishes, clothing,
swim suit, hat
etc.
You will carry what you bring, so pack light. | | Recommended Items to Bring:
Use our Event Checklists to make sure you have everything you need. Your favorite snacks.
