Itinerary:
Now that the City Workers strike has been settled we can visit Fort York!
We will meet at 11:45 am at Bar Wellington, which is at 520 Wellington Street West, at Portland St – between Spadina Ave and Bathurst St.
At about 1:30 pm, we will walk to Fort York and spend the afternoon there. Once we are finished visiting the Fort, those who want can find a restaurant for coffee and or drinks.
The City's web site notes, "Lieutenant Governor John Graves Simcoe founded modern urban Toronto (i.e. Town of York), when he established Fort York in 1793. The British built Fort York at the mouth of Garrison creek to guard against possible American attempts to invade Canada."
Well, a few things have changed in the intervening years. The City has grown up from the lake. Plus the threat of American invasion has been much reduced. Fort York still exists, hidden between the Gardner Expressway to the south, the railway right-of- way to the north and Bathurst St. to the east.
