Itinerary:
Come on the Garrison Creek Discovery walk and then step back into history with a visit to Fort York. The walk is about 4 kms long and will take about 1.5 hours to complete - OK it will be more of a stroll! Toward the end of the hike, we will find a place for a picnic in a park. Then we will walk on to Fort York and spend the afternoon there. Once we are finished visiting the Fort, we can find a restaurant for dinner, and who knows if people want, we can stay down at the waterfront to watch the fireworks.

The City's web site notes, "Lieutenant Governor John Graves Simcoe founded modern urban Toronto (i.e. Town of York), when he established Fort York in 1793. At that time, Garrison Creek flowed in a large deep ravine with several tributaries, from north of St. Clair Avenue to Lake Ontario. The creek had sparkling clear water and was famous for its salmon fishing. The British built Fort York at the mouth of the creek to guard against possible American attempts to invade Canada."

Well, a few things have changed in the intervening years. The creek and its ravine have long since been buried, and the City has grown up from the lake to encompass all the creek's watershed (Plus the threat of American invasion has been much reduced). Nonetheless, some traces of the original landscape still exist today, which we will be looking for. Fort York also still exists hidden between the Gardner Expressway to the south and the railway right-of- way to the north.
